The first filter is a mesh sponge type that stops debris from the motor and charcoal filter. Would this work?** A: The aquaclear sponges make excellent pre-filters for most filter applications - a great replacement for floss in in-tank air-powered filters because you can just rinse them out & reuse. that way you keep all the beneficial bacteria that have colonized the sponge. You'll probably have to trim them to shape, though. I also poke a hole in one and put it on the intake tube of my aquaclear filters, to keep baby fishies from being sucked up. **Q: How long does this last and can you use this with a characol bag too?** A: You’ve got three sections. Spounge in the bottom then charcoal then the ammonia on top. I use two of these. So I can clean one while the other still works. Give it time to develope the organic good bacteria....a week or so then do the others. Using one of these makes a mess when change the inserts in it. That why I use two separate filters. As far as how long they will last. ...a month or so I’d think. But you don’t want to clean out the good bacteria. I have a 55 gal. I tend to like lots of filters. **Q: How often i should change it ?** A: I change mine every 3:months. I have it in bottom of haing on filter with bio rings on top.
