I used this 40-volume cream developer for a European mount on a whitetail deer skull, and overall it did a commendable job of whitening the bone. The thick, gel-style consistency made it easy to apply evenly across the skull, and I saw the bone lighten up quite nicely without much additional effort. What I liked: The creamy texture stayed in place well, so I could coat the entire skull without it running off. The lift action was strong enough that I achieved a bright, clean white finish—exactly what I wanted for the mount. It worked more affordably compared to specialty bone-whitening formulas I’d seen. What to watch out for: This product is designed for hair lightening—not originally for bone/mount preparation—so you’re essentially adapting it “off label.” Make sure you thoroughly clean and degrease the skull before application. With high-volume developers like this, there’s a risk of over-bleaching or damaging the bone if left on too long. Monitoring the process closely is key. After whitening, you’ll still want to seal or finish the skull properly for longevity and protection against yellowing or stains. Bottom line: If you’re doing a DIY European mount and want a budget-friendly solution that does whiten skulls effectively, this works. But treat it like a strong chemical tool—not a plug-and-play bone whitening kit—and follow good preparation and finishing steps to get the best result.
