Fabulous book. I started it with my 7year old daughter 24 years ago, read it with my son a few years later, and now I'm reading it with my oldest granddaughter. There's just enough fantasy, mixed with real life, to make it believable. The children are realistic, and the conversational language is good. The book also provides some historical background about Great Britain and ancient myth. It's appropriate for boys or girls, and it's fun with an underlying theme of good over evil. I think it's timeless. And don't miss her Dark is Rising series for children 9 and over!

I've always been a fan of Susan Cooper's writing, and this is another excellent addition to her library of fantastic works to delight the child in even the oldest among us.

My son needed this book for a school project & wasn't really happy about being "forced" to read. However, this book captured his interest quickly, and he really ended up enjoying it.
