Hi Kelsey...if you are making reference to the Sport Berkey Water Bottle...the filter is at the base of the straw...when you suck on the sraw draw water is drawn thru the filter and passes through it where it is filtered...

How often do the filters need to be replaced?

My husband and I been using this system for years but have been more diligent with the red dye test since children. The last set lasted a mere six months for our now family of 4 and now the replacements have again failed after 1.5 years (maybe sooner since we haven't tested for months). Unfortunately it looks like we need to reevaluate our filtration system.
