I tried this and it worked perfectly. It is difficult to say if it retains the IP rating. My guess is that the connector/cable that comes with the G4 instant is no more waterproof than this cable. It's waterproofness is likely because the port is recessed in the bottom of the camera and the camera is not designed to be flipped upside down.
