Does it work with Linux?

Sort of..... depending upon the version you get which determines the configuration it needs to be used with Linux and how useful they are. These sticks come in 2 flavors, configured for serial mode or configured for highlink mode. The ones like the one I received are configured in highlink mode and present themselves as a usb Ethernet interface. In this mode the stick presents itself as a nat router that serves dhcp and presents a config web page. This works fine if all you ever want to do is browse the web or possibly make outbound connections. The pseudo Ethernet and router function however serves to choke your throughput. What you really want though is one of these that is configured for serial mode, ie the version with serial mode firmware loaded. This gets rid of the nat and the modem / stick is configured with standard PPP. This allows for inbound connections, full ipv6 config and a lot more utility. My suggestion - do a bit of hunting and find one preloaded with stick mode serial firmware. While the hilink sticks like this one work, they are less useful under Linux, (and windows as well, but your average windows user may have trouble getting the stick mode serial device working as its not just plug and go). On both os stick mode will serve you better but require significant configuration and knowledge to get it working the first time. I returned mine.

Does this work with both cdma and gsm?

It doesn't support CDMA. Please find more info below FYI. The Huawei E3372 can also work with UMTS networks including DC-HSPA+ with up to 42.2 Mbit/s in the downlink and 5.76 Mbit/s in the uplink when LTE network is not available. And the GSM and EDGE networks are supported. The LTE modem could support the frequency ranges of 800, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 megahertz (both FDD LTE), making it well suited for use in Europe. If you use it in America, it can be only conditionally recommended. In UMTS, it supports dual band (900/2100MHz) and in GSM supports Quadband.

Can someone explain how this works? Does it require a data only sim card?

Does this work on usa t mobile?

I have had one of these for more than a few years, and I have used it from time to time. I used it 2 months ago (November 2022) and I got the solid Blue light, which was 4G, but after no use for 2 months, same carrier, same software installed, Tello US, a T Mobile MVNO, it is now giving me a Green light, meaning 2G only. And as a result it is VERY slow now. Same software, same SIM, but now only 2G. Also I tried putting the IMEI into the T Mobile website and I get a message that this device has only LIMITED support, so things have changed since last time I used it. Because I can now only get 2G, I can't recommend this to anyone. I am looking at another brand, ZTE, or just maybe not replace it at all. I wanted to have a way to access internet if my electric goes out without using a cell phone as a wifi hotspot, but I may just give up on it since the ZTE item has many unfavorable reviews. The primary issue appears to be that this E3372 does NOT support a 64 bit system, it was designed back in the days of 32 bit PCs or MACs and has never had the software updated. I had a Macbook Air for a while before I sold it, and the MAC does not support 32 bit anything at all, so this could not be used.

- SIM free: it is not locked to any particular mobile operator, should work with many different SIM cards, as long as a mobile operator works using supported frequencies ( i.e. the mobile operator's working frequencies should fall into the list of the devices supported frequencies given in the description above, and as per description these are the supported frequencies of the device: 4G LTE 2100/1800/2600/900/800Mhz & 3G 900/2100Mhz. ). - Easy to use, no setup is required: I expected it would require some settings or utility programs to be installed in computer, but it just worked by itself. As soon as I connected it to my laptop, it gave Internet access immediately without any settings. Worked very well for a couple of days while I was using it.

After hours of research through forums and online resources, it seems that Huawei used to have a proper "software companion" with "phone calling" feature like a softphone to use with their eariler 3G usb modems. I bought this, with the hopes that I'd use my Sim card with it to make phone calls from my laptop and completely ditch my Cellphone, it turns out there is no calling feature with this modem... and the seller does not mention anything about it... It is sad that big companies just do not want this to happen! and want us to carry both a pc and a cellphone everywhere we go. Even Microsoft Windows used to a have a Dialer software that they ditched for a useless app that requires having a cellphone in the first place to make a call! It is sad how with all the advances in technology we have today, only Greed will decided what type of gadgets we can or can't have today...

Ich benutze das Gerät als Fallback mit einer Fritzbox 7590AX. Ich musste zusätzlich den Kompatibilitätsmodus in der Fritzbox unter Mobilfunkgerät aktivieren. Danach lief alles wie am Schnürchen. Der Stick stellt unter 192.168.8.1 eine Weboberfläche zur Verfügung wo man alle Einstellungen einsehen kann und auch eingehenden SMS Angezeigt bekommt. Unter einem Fedora Linux lief das Stick auch einwandfrei ohne irgendwelche Konfiguration, reinstecken, läuft. Der Durchsatz mit 4G im Telekom Netz ist hervorragend.
