what will be the steps before using this wax?

I would recommend washing your car with a cleaner that removes traffic film like Purple Power Vehicle and Boat wash, then using this product. If you haven't clayed your car or waxed it in a long time, I'd add 2 steps -- Meguiars Wash Plus, then, while the Meguiars soap is still on the vehicle, use a synthetic clay like ClayZilla, Mothers Speed Clay, or Nanoskin. That will remove bonded contaminants. Follow up either the wash or the wash/wash/clay with the Fast Finish. The shine will blow you away!

Can it be applied on top of the wax?

Better to apply under a wax. Fast Finish is a paint sealant. Always apply your paint sealant as a base layer then your wax (carnauba) on top. That's the correct sequence to layer products.

It says it lasts a year but does it really last that long?

It's so easy to apply I just apply a coat every other month. Durability depends on weather conditions if the car is garaged etc. I detailed cars for over 25 years and nothing lasts a year on a daily driver. But when you can protect a car in under 20 minutes with little effort who cares.

Do I need to mask off plastic trim?

There no need to mask off plastic trim. It’s safe on trim and works well also. Just don’t get on glass.
