Review: Terrific Paper for fountain pens. Buying a couple more packages - Update: Since my review a year ago I've ordered a few more packages of this paper. I've made a few notebooks now with the 52g/m^2 paper, binding them and using an insert sheet with printed lines for a writing guide. I also write on both sides of the paper. It's quite thin, doesn't bleed, but it's not opaque. I just had to make my lines thicker and darker to show through the writing on the back of the page. Terrific paper. Wonderful paper for fountain pen. This is one of the top 2-3 papers for writing with a fountain pen. Extremely thin--perfect weight for a travel notebook. I make my own notebooks and like to print out light grey lines to help my bad penmanship, but this paper is just too thin to go through the laser printer (a top loading ink jet might work). It doesn't bleed through (I use various Noodler Inks) but it does 'show through.' This show through is faint enough to not be too distracting, but when I write on both sides I just use a dark backing sheet like when you scan or copy something that 'shows through'. Ink takes a bit longer to dry than on more porous laser paper, but I only notice this if I've made pencil marks that I try to erase moments after over writing in ink or I smudge one of the last three lines I've written. So it's like ten seconds with most ink before it won't smudge. Update + three months. I heat bonded 200 sheets of this to some card stock to make a 400 page travel journal. It's almost all filled, held up well. This is thin but very good paper. To help my messy handwriting, I made a lined sheet to place under the page I was writing on. I could see through well enough to keep my lines straight. When I turned my notebook over and started writing pages 200-400 on the back sides, I was concerned that the writing on the other side would obscure the lines. Worked well enough that I'm about to make another notebook. I used an italics nib fountain pen, lays down a lot of ink, Noodler's Polar Blue (Terrific ink absolutely no clogs in three months with minimal maintenance. I think I wiped off the nib a couple of times, and just incase I 'flossed' the feed slot.) Great paper. Almost no smudging unless I smear the ink seconds after I write. No 'blotter' transfer on any of the facing sheets.
Review: Amazing paper, the first sheet is a piece of blotter paper - Tomoe River paper is the perfect compromise between smooth and absorbent. It’s thin as tissue paper but can handle the wettest of inks. I use this pad for writing letters but mostly for taking notes at work and testing fountain pens out at home. Unlike Rhodia paper there’s enough texture to feel your pen writing even with the smoothest nibs but it doesn’t bleed at all. The paper has the perfect balance of coating and absorbency too. This pad is essential to anyone who wants to test or tune their pens. I use this and a Rhodia pad together to test how pens work on different papers. It’s a luxurious paper that you won’t regret buying. This pad is pure white which helps bring out all the color properties of fountain pen inks whereas the cream paper is nice as well but not as good for ink testing. I use the white paper at home and cream at work for notes at my desk. My only caution is that the first page is actually a piece of blotting paper. I tried to write on it and thought something was wrong. Go to the second sheet when you first get this otherwise you’ll be writing on the blotter paper and it’ll make a huge inky mess. I’m surprised that no one warns you about that and the packaging doesn’t mention it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Best Paper for Fountain Pens and Pen Pals
*by I***A on August 9, 2020*

Over the last 6 months, I've tried 15+ different types of fountain pen paper from the more ubiquitous brands (Strathmore, Crane, G. Lalo, Original Crown Mill, Clairefontaine/Rhodia) to the more specialty brands (Yamamoto, Franklin Christoph). I've tried them in different sizes, different weights, different cotton blends, and different finishes. If you like fountain pens, this paper is the absolute best. - The lighter weight variety has very slight ghosting (show through) but some people like that. - There's absolutely no bleeding or feathering. - It shows sheening and shading like no other. Even your most boring inks will look exotic and gorgeous on this paper. - The dry time for inks (especially high sheen) is reasonable. - Both weights are fantastic for writing letters. You can cram so many sheets in an envelope and not worry about needing extra stamps. - Yamamoto paper is the only paper that I've found that makes inks look even better. But it's impossible to get in the US without a grey market buyer and it's coating that makes it so smooth and the ink lovely is extremely smudgeable and reacts quickly to the oils in your hands. So I prefer Tomoe RIver to writing with gloves on. One quick note: There's a rumor that they bought new machines and the paper isn't quite the same as the Tomoe I've been buying for years. I may have received an old batch but I doubt it. It's still the best you'll find.
