The lid is glossy black plastic of decent quality (it doesn't feel brittle) with one of those waxy paper inserts that provides the seal. It can be closed somewhat tightly, so if you are thinking of using these for cosmetics, you should be safe traveling with thicker substances like waxes or creams, but traveling with an actual liquid in here would be a gamble. I love  Nalgene  travel containers to leak-proof my liquids. It will definitely be sufficient for keeping herbs, spices or an 1/8 of weed fresh for a few months.Size:I took a picture with a somewhat standard-sized spice jar. It's less than 1/2 as tall, and a little wider. External dimensions are 2-1/8" diameter and 2" height. It holds 2 oz. (i.e. 1/4 cup or 60mL) up to the lip below the threads, so if necessary, you could put a little more than 2 oz. in there.Packaging:Some reviews from early 2016 said that the jars arrived broken. I bought these in January, 2017, and they were double bubble-wrapped with care. It seems like Amazon has taken care of this problem.
