Nothing comes close to this chalk. If teachers in the US had access to this back in the 90s when blackboards were being phased out, we might have been prevented from years of stinky, dried out, plastic waste producing whiteboard markers on stained, scratched up whiteboards. On a good quality porcelain or slate chalkboard, this glides on effortlessly and wipes off easily, and can be cleaned up with a damp rag when the board gets too dusty. I got a chalkboard from that a school near recently liquidated for my kids to draw on and decided to pick this up to try out since I'd heard about the hype. It lives up to its reputation. It's quieter. The colors are vibrant so you can use less pressure. It produces less dust. Once you learn the correct pressure it glides across the board. It's harder so if you're gentle a single stick will last you probably 5x times as long as a Crayola stick. The colors don't erase as easily as the white, but still much more easily than a whiteboard. I just wipe off my board with a microfiber cloth. It is harder than normal chalk, but it still breaks easily if you drop it. I got some chalk holders for my kids after they broke a couple sticks. At the time of purchase this was the best price I could find to try it out, but it was still not "cheap". $1.25/stick seems like a lot for just "chalk", but once you try it, you'll see why. If you're an artist, or a lecturer, or just want the best blackboard experience, then this is absolutely worth it. But if you just want something for your kids to scribble on the sidewalk, buy something cheap.

Hands down, this is the best chalk in the world. It truly lives up to its reputation—it is so smooth to write with on a chalkboard, and it doesn't break easily anytime I try to write something important on the board. The colors, both neon and regular, are so vibrant on the board, and really make my letters and topics pop so that they're visible all around. And for me, the best part is that unlike other cheap chalk I've used before, the chalk does not sound scratchy or make shrill sounds as it glides along the surface of the board—it's like writing with butter! ❤️ Not many office or school supplies feel like this, so it gets my seal of approval. Of course, I do love the fact that it's is imperceptive in the dust it leaves behind—honestly, I don't even notice any dust at all as I write, not even on my hands. Even without the wax coating, I don't get s whole lot of chalk color on my hands by the time I finish writing on the board. The chalk itself is the perfect size and thickness for writing—not to skinny that it becomes brittle and breaks, but not to thick that it feels too chunky in the hand for writing. And though proprietary chalk holders do exist for the Hagaromo chalk, I personally don't believe it's necessary, since the chalk leaves so little dust behind. It's also impressive how the chalk erases cleanly—even the colored chalk disappears from the board after erasing it, leaving no trace behind of its existence. My only gripe was the way Amazon handled packaging my chalk. There was barely any bubble wrap or cushioning in the box to keep them from arriving broken in pieces. Some of the sticks of chalk survived shipping, but about 80% of the other chalk pieces where broken when I took them out from their box. I still use the pieces, and they still perform well, but I'm just disappointed about how the chalk arrived in pieces rather than whole. This is definitely not Hagaromo's fault, because they take great care in both crafting and packaging their chalk before it gets shipped out internationally. All in all, the chalk itself is fantastic—I will definitely be buying this again! Hagaromo has turned me into a fan. I may test these to see what other applications the colored chalk can be used for in chalkboard writing, most especially in calligraphy or chalkboard art applications.

It’s great just like how people advertise it. You don’t need to put any pressure on it and it’s coated so you’re hands don’t catch chalk dust, and it’s super easy to erase!

I teach a weekly class to adults, and use a chalkboard. The chalk I was using was terrible. It was the Crayola brand, and it screeched when I would write on the board, causing everyone to shudder. It would break and skip. It left marks on the board. I hated that chalk! I thought to myself, there has got to be some decent chalk somewhere! After doing a bit of research, I found this chalk. The reviews sounded great, but I was still skeptical. But I couldn't continue to use the chalk I had, it was so awful. I ordered this chalk and it arrived quickly. I didn't have a chalkboard to try it on at home, so I had to wait until my weekly class. When it was time to write on the chalkboard, I announced to the class that I had gotten some new chalk, which was supposed to be the greatest chalk in the world. Everyone laughed and asked if I had tested it yet, and I said no! This will be the first time, in front of everyone. So I pulled out a piece of the chalk and started to write on the board. Oh! It was SO heavenly! I said out loud, "Oh, wow! This is NICE!" Everyone could even see for themselves how nicely it was writing. And the feel! It's so silky and smooth on the board! No more skin-tingling screeching! No more skipping and breaking! The running joke I have with my class is that I'm a great speller when I'm not writing on a chalkboard. At one point I was writing a word with this new heavenly chalk, and I was spelling out the letters as I wrote, and I said, "Hey! This chalk is even making me a better speller!" Haha! I used to dread having to write on the board. But now I'm looking forward to it! I was telling my Mom about my new heavenly chalk, and she also teaches a class and had similar yucky chalk, so she ordered this heavenly chalk for herself. She used it in her class last week and she loved it. I'm so glad that I found this chalk!
