The rim doesn't leak with normal use. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that most people expect lids to be completely water tight. The sliding opening for the drinking hole is not water proof and slides back and forth pretty easily. My mom, who I bought it for does not seem to mind though. I think an opening that has some kind of stop to prevent the sliding door from going down while you are drinking (and potentially be leak proof) would make it a 5. I was happy with the purchase though because it fit the need pretty well.
