No the small microphone piece does not come off by itself. Yes you could take the metal wire that it is attached to it off and basically use it as a lav if you rig it with a clip, but that would mean damaging the actual headset. Also the microphone is very sensitive so using it as a lav mic, it would move a lot and if the metal wire is bumped at all (even the slightest tap) which you will get a lot of if used this way, it will pop and distort the microphone very easily.
