## Description

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1967 Pop classic containing both the stereo mix and very rare mono mix of the album. Arranged by the legendary Gene Page (Phil Spector/Barry White/Buffalo Springfield), The New Wave fused the Folk-Pop sounds of Simon & Garfunkel and Chad & Jeremy with contributions from LA studio wizards, including Carol Kaye and Van Dyke Parks-concurrent to his work on the Beach Boys' Smile. Vibes, oboes, harpsichords, swirling strings, breezy vocals, and gently psychedelic affectations abound on this incredibly rare artifact of 1967 Los Angeles. The 16-page, full-color booklet includes rare, unpublished photos and extensive liner notes featuring the participation of original band members. Now Sounds.

    Classic

The New Wave were a folk duo with Reid King and Thom Adreola. They recorded one album in 1967. The album was a masterpiece of orchestrated folk, and featured Van Dyke Parks, as well as session men like Ron Carter and Hal Blaine. What works so well about this album is its subtlety.. These are not the up-front orchestrations of, say, Sgt. Pepper or Love's Forever Changes. Producer Gene Page keeps the strings and reeds secondary to the wonderful acoustic guitar playing. There are plenty of garnishes here--listen especially for the vibraphone--but they are kept in spots you really have to listen for. This forces you to listen deeply and adds a depth to the musical appreciation. The album comes twice on thiss CD, mixed in stereo and mono. I prefer the mono mix, as it is cleaner, allowing you to hear the layers in more detail. There are also several stripped down bonus tracks, which I wish were given the same treatment as the proper album.

The Early New Wave Now Available

This CD gets 5 Stars from me despite the Producers bloated over-production, which buried this duo's intricate guitar work and thoughtful lyrics under a heavy layer of Session Musicians. Only with their Island Records recording (unreleased in the US) of their 2nd album in 1969 would these two very talented people really hit their stride. I've known both Reid and Tom since our high school days. Reid did a lot of work before this CD's release to improve the balance between their music and the stifling Production, so this CD is actually better than when originally released. Their guitars alone produced music and lyrics that wrapped around you creating truly subtle, almost magical moods. Apart from the production, these 2 talented people have created truly dynamic and sensitive music uniquely their own. Unfortunately aimed at the Rock market, this CD falls better into a folk-poetic category. The music is excellent, although early. Also there is an amazing Album Cover by the great artist Allan Hart.

    PLEASANT AT BEST

A bit optimistic in the editorial review. I would barely call this Simon and GarSimon in that there is no dominant voice to carry the material. Not elevator music but half way up the escalator. Free Design (Kites) mixed with David and Jonathan. This music could have played over the end credits of any boy meets girl / loses girl type movie of the 60's. That being said, I can't seem to give it up completely. I definitely have to be in a mellow mood to play it. Also, having been weened on mono records and transistor radio I find the stereo versions of the songs to be refreshingly clear. I wouldn't put this high on a want list but for the right price not the worst addition to your 60's collection.
