An excellent little blade for a good price!
This thing is awesome. I just spent a couple hours frankly abusing the blade on various stuff, including all sorts of branches, an old wooden chair, some two-by-fours and even a log—and I'm very impressed, especially for the price. It feels sturdy and cuts very well (very sharp, right out of the box), and the lightweight construction ensures smooth handling. I was concerned at first that the thin blade might not be up to heavier work, but trying it out has dismissed these worries. I bought it to replace an old machete, figuring, "what the hell, let's try something that tickles my geeky, history-buff fancy," and I feel that I made a good decision. This thing is very useful and very, very entertaining to use. The Combat Commander was great for both slicing and stabbing; it held its edge very well, and the point is still pristine (even after stabbing it right into the log a dozen times and hacking the chair to bits). It made short work of branches and cut deeply into the two-by-fours with very little effort. I'll admit that when I hacked up the seat of that old wooden chair, I had boyish fantasies of being a Roman legionary or maybe a Greek hoplite, splintering my opponents shield in battle. Like I said, this thing is lots of fun. The handle is comfortable and sturdy, the rubberized grip is secure; the lanyard hole in the middle is a bit unusual for me, but I'll probably use the smaller hole on the "pommel," which is is actually the exposed (and moderately pointy) end of the tang. The blade comes nice and sharp, with a light coating of oil. The sheath is nice and durable, and the lockdown strap holds the blade in place with impressive snugness. All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase. It promises to be a very handy, and kinda flashy tool for outdoor work and camping. And I have no doubt that it would be great for personal defense, in the unlikely event that such a thing became necessary, considering the damage it did to so much solid wood. It works like a machete and handles like a short sword, a fun, great-looking new toy for an outdoorsy person or anybody with a love a blades. I'd recommend the Combat Commander to anyone, anytime.

Exemplary Go-Bag Weapon
If this is the type blade you're looking for, then this is the crém-de-la-crém of viable options in a working model! I'm not really a personal fan of a double edged design (sword was a gift), but the Combat Commander feels just right in the hand by weight, size and heft. Very nimble little piece for slashing and back-slashing, but especially stabbing there with! In third part comparison to the military grade SOG "Fusion" Tomahawk which compares well to the M48 Tactical Tomahawk, the brother of this very sword, I would say it's essentially built to the very same standards - this sucker is solid! If you ever thought getting one of these new age 'hawks in your hand felt good, wait until you pick-up a Combat Commander! It should also be noted, as everyone wants to know how it compares to the Cold Steel alternative, this sword is a few inches shorter, but given the machete metal used in the CS model, that's really preferential. The thickness seems a little better with minimal noteworthy bend, comparably. Also, the deeper grind is comforting and it comes razor sharp, like "...dang" Any potential misgiving are more akin to oddities than real problems, so to speak. The lanyard hole is certainly in a curious location, but I'd hesitate to call it "awkward" after looping a dogtag chain through it and testing said lanyard-equivalent through middle and ring fingers, it takes all of 5-seconds to re-acclimate to. On the other hand, the fastening strap can be, and I stress, EASILY sliced off by careless un-sheathing, I really should have known better... To those on the fence, the price is good, so just go for it. If it still doesn't float your boat, lash it to a back-up bug-out bag for your buddy's brother ;-). They'll praise you @ Go Time for arming them so w/ such a BA piece of generic kit, seriously! I mean, the Combat Commander can hardly claim the title of "specialty item" but it looks/feels like exactly what you need in the closet for a grid down type scenario for those who never took the time to lean their own preferences, aka the valuable bro who finally says "You were right all along, now give me a weapon!"

I like this better than Cold Steel's Gladius
I like this better than Cold Steel's Gladius. I had one and gave it away. This is smaller and more practical in the 21st century as a short sword. The Cold Steel version would be what I'd take to an actual battlefield with the Roman Legion. This requires less strength and is easier to carry and wield. I gave the Cold Steel gladius and polymer buckler to a 6 foot 5 friend of mine, its perfect for him. I take this one on hikes, cut down full size trees with it and slaughter brush. It doesn't have the brush cutting talent of a latin machete but makes a superior weapon by far, both for intimidation value and ease of thrusting. Where this product really shines is the grip. I've never had a more comfortable handle, both with and without gloves. The cold steel machete hurt my wrist to use because of the ball at the end, which is meant to balance it for thrusting. I prefer the simple dull metal spike on the UC machete, very nasty weapon and a good alternative to a almost certainly lethal strike, should the situation call for and allow it. I work out, i do martial arts, im very active, but I'm not a professional knight or large frame stronger than average guy, and i need to take this through the woods and up mile high mountains and climb trees rather than fight in the sands of the coliseum, so the Uniter Cutlery makes more sense for me. The UC holds up well to what many call abuse, what I call simply what a machete is for. Just don't stab anything metal or stone or ice or otherwise very hard with the tip unless you want to re work it yourself. Its a fine tip, and you could pierce armor with it and its still be very serviceable, but if you want to keep it pristine don't mess with it. I lightly tapped a garbage fire extinguisher with a thrust I slowed down at the last instant and i had to spend some time on the WorkSharp to repair it, and mistake could have been costly. But I think this rule holds with all blades with not much more or less strictness so its no bad on the UC. It's not forged folded expert smith steel or some crazy high grade powdered alloy. That's why its cheap and if it breaks you can get new ones all day long. The blade is a bit loose with the handle, I can move it ever so slightly (like how even tight fitting AK magazines still wobble a few mm) but i've never noticed a difference when cutting all manner of things or felt it cost me in the energy transfer to hard or soft targets (something I feel very keenly on other blades, especially not full tang ones) I like the sheath a lot to. You can just cut off the retaining snap, or get creative and tie it behind the sheath along with the belt loop like I did, and it becomes a simple sheath that relies on gravity that I carry in my hand no problem at all. It doesn't have the tight fit of a wooden scabbard where the blade positively clicks into place, like a katana or roman legion gladius, but it won't fall out easily only if you hold it upside down. The sheath won't be cut through if you do draw cuts, the rivets ensure that. You get a lot for your money here. A 200 dollar custom gladius won't be 10 times as good as this machete for 20 bucks.

Buy it, Try it, Love it!
I purchased this gladius copy for two resaons: price and length of the blade. I own the Cold Steel Gladius machete and found it to be a well made tool and though this one, based on the number of good reviews, would be a good companion piece. The price was about $10 less then the CS version so I thought I would take a chance. When it came, I was taken aback by the box, which did little to protect it. However, the handle and blade were wrapped in plastic to keep moisture from it, a nice touch. It came in it's sheath (more on that later). After wiping the blade down with some CLP lubricant and honing the factory edges a bit, I compared it to the CS machete side by side. The CS blade is about 2" longer and the blade was a tad bit thicker. Also, the handle material of the CS blade, while very tough, is a bit slippery. Then it was time for the 20 oz. water bottle test. One quick swing cleaved the bottle in twain, leaving the bottom half sitting .5 inches (yes, I measured) from where I had set it! In other words, it's a definite cutting blade! The United gladius has a rubberized handle that is very comfortable in the hand and has plenty of room for any hand size. It has better balance then the CS gladius, which is a lot more point heavy when you hold the two next to each other. The United blade is quick in the hand, has a very nice wasp waist blade with a nicely tapered point that penetrates deep. The sheath isn't bad but it isn't great, either. It does have a large loop to fit any width of belt and seems to be a little better constructed and designed then my CS one. For now, it will do the job until I can fashion a leather, wood or a Kydex version. I am impressed with how United Cutlery has stepped up the quality of their product line and this Combat Commander Gladius is not exception. For the price, I am very happy with it.

Good modern weapon blade. Inexpensive But Great Design
This sword handles fast and cuts good. I cut up some jugs, and hard fruit and it just sliced through with no effort. The Point of Balance is 2.5" from the guard so the sword feels super fast, but there is still enough weight to cut. To test the heat treatment of the blade, I stabbed into wood a couple of times and pulled out, nothing broke. I also chopped into wood and the blade wasn't damaged. So it seems that I got a good sword with good heat treatment. The blade came sharp enough out of the box but I ran it over a strop with sharpening compound for 15 minutes and this improved the sharpness significantly. The materials on the sword and sheath are inexpensive... But the designers used what they got with the price point and designed a great WEAPON. Just don't try to use this thing like a prybar or chop wood... The thin blade isn't designed for that.

Excellent Quality!!!!
I purchased this sword after reading reviews for both United Cutlery and Cold Steel's "gladius" swords. First off, this sword is not in the style of the traditional Roman gladius. The blade has a nore leaf-shaped profile, making it closer to the Greek Xiphos (though this is much, much shorter) Anyways, Cold Steel's sword is nearly exaclty as to how the Roman gladius is, with a straight short blade. However, I am glad that I purchased this one, though the blade IS stainless steel (SS), it is very strong. The blade is a little thicker than a machete blade, but again, is very tough. The handle is a hard rubber but still comfortable and for those asking, the "sword" is full tang, meaning the metal of the blade extends all the way through the handle to the pommel. There is a glassbreaker on the end which is a really neat addition. The blade does come sharp, but not enough to pass the paper test (though you could sharpen it more if you want, I will). Finally, the shealth is better quality than I thought, as I expected it was nylon but unlike I expected was lined with thin plastic and reinforced at the tip. It has a snap to secure the sword in and a loop to hitch it to the belt. All in all, the United Cutlery "Combat Gladiator" sword is most definitely worth the $30 and is extremely good quality for the price. It arrived within two days of my purchase in the United Cutlery box which was in the Amazon box, the sword itself wrapped separately and secured ib the shealth- also wrapped- in the box.

Good lightweight machete, but hilt needs to go.
I was going to write a long review of this sword, but I read a review that worth sharing. I was going to tell you that this "machete" is excellent for the money. I was going to point out that: -1060 carbon steel (good) -made in China (you decided) -cuts water vines up to an inch pretty well -works good on smaller stuff -light weight makes it easier to control -will penetrate the sidewall of tire -did NOT penetrate tire tread -not for heavy use; use Cold Steel Jungle Machete for thicker than an inch brush -will bend a little with heavy use but you can bend it back. -sharp when it arrives, but will need file and stone work for a good edge. (use Crescent Nicholson 8" Rectangular Double/Single Cut Axe File and Lansky Puck - Dual Grit Multi-Purpose Sharpener) I was going to point out that pommel needs to be cut and ground down because it gets in the way when you actually use this thing as a machete (or sword), digging into your wrist as you swing at branches or well.......gnomes. But instead I'm going to recommend you read the review by "Matheau Kulhanek; 5.0 out of 5 stars; This Gnome slaying machine saved my life. Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2019."

Ok, the sword from Gladiator, this is not. A sword, this is not. Really, it's not. It's a machete, and a damn fine one. Don't get me wrong, the roman styling is entirely why I bought this sharp pointy piece of metal, but this blade will not avenge a murdered son and murdered wife, nor overthrow a pretender to the throne. It will however look smashing on a wall, or avenge a burned-out weedwhacker...your choice.

Best bang for your buck!
This is a modern interpretation of a gladius short sword! It can cut, but its stabbing power is extreme! If you use it for training (or actual combat), you'll do fine with it! It is lighter (nimbler) than a machete...and so while you could cut light brush with it, there are better + more durable tools for doing that. However, if you use it as a throwing knife , an axe, or try to to stab car doors = you'll likely break it. At the very least, you'll end up damaging the fine stabbing tip. While the steel is fine (1060 High Carbon), the temper is a bit lacking.....but for the price, I'm happy that it tempered at all! Most of the tempering is focused on the cutting part of the blade (near the tip of the blade, where the blade widens). Sheath is good as well. You can mount vertically on your belt via the main loop, or horizontally via the additional loop (also allows you to mount it on a pack strap). No complaints there. Basically, this product offers a very high value for the price!

Weiter so, United Cutlery! :-) Bitte mehr davon...
