Lignum is a very dense wood, but these are very light, and lignum doesn't float in water, which I tested after they broke. I've had other lignum pics which are very tough, and lasted until they wore out, not breaking. They're quite stiff, which works great for single string playing. They also work fine for playing rhythm. You just have to be used to a stiff pick and the way it reacts to the strings when strumming. They don't flex at all, so your grip is adjusted slightly, and all your rhythms work just fine. These picks are easy to hold on to, as they are thicker at the top, and the wood is not slick like the synthetic "tortoise" picks sometimes are. They have a slightly warmer sound than the Red Bear Heavy picks that I've used for several years. (As of this writing, the Red Bear costs $28 each and you have to wait for your order to be produced.) I needed some picks sooner, so I decided to try these Lignum Vitae. I've tried both picks side by side and these Timber Tones picks perform and sound as good, maybe even better. They sound slightly different, but I like them just as well. I can't say how many hours of playing it will take to wear a Lignum Vitae pick out, but all picks wear out eventually. These are readily available and they are not exorbitantly priced.
