Great book! A piece of BJJ history

I love this book. It has been a dream of mine to train Gracie Jiu Jitsu for almost 30 years now. And 3 months ago, that dream came true! A Gracie Jiu Jitsu gym opened near my home and I have been training every week. I just ordered this book recently and I can confirm that every week's lessons are straight from this book. Practical self defense techniques that anyone can learn. This style of Jiu Jitsu was created to give the smaller or weaker person an advantage against a larger, stronger opponent, and it works! I highly recommend owning a copy of this book. If you can't enroll at a gym, you can study the techniques in this book and watch videos. It will make a difference.

Absolutely love the book, has the best step by step guide definitely worth the buy

I've been looking for this book for quite some time, but used editions were selling for $150-3000 (autographed by Helio). I saw this brand new (out-of-print) revised edition for $115 and had to buy it. It is a great reference. While some of the techniques might seem a bit dated, after working through the pictures, noting the details with Post-Its, I'd say it rivals videos, in some ways, in revealing details that otherwise might get missed. If nothing else, it provides a view into the origins of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and it's self-defense foundations... something I think gets lost in the more sports-oriented BJJ. Highly recommended if you are really into Gracie Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ!

I was a little hesitant on this purchase but eventually bought this for my son as a gift who recently started BJJ. I really want him to learn the Martial Art as originally intended, for self defense. This book focuses on that. He is using this book as a an additional tool to help him emerge himself in the BJJ training. Great quality and tons of information. Would recommend for anyone serious about BJJ.

The book at over $100 is expensive. But once you realize the book is a GJJ instructional in book form instead of video the price tag is justified. This is not a traditional book like an autobiography on Helio Gracie or the Gracie family so don't expect that and if it was the $100 price tag would be an absurd asking price then. Keep in mind many BJJ instructional videos on the market goes for $77 to $279 so the price of this book reflects that. Plus this book will be a future collector's item too, if not already, and the value will continue to increase. Any serious GJJ practioner who trains self defense focused BJJ and not 'sport BJJ' should get this book if you are already buying instructional videos. Just my thoughts

Grandmaster Helio’s guide to self defense using Gracie Jiu-Jitsu gives a comprehensive, step by step, easy to follow picture and descriptive tutorial to prepare yourself against attack by a stronger, bigger, aggressive opponent. Once you have the book, it’s up to you to practice the techniques to become reflexive. It covers most every common attack scenario and is proven to be effective. I purchased it to have a visual reminder of the techniques I learn at the dojo and it is extremely helpful- much better than my stick figure drawings in my notes!

I love the book! I just wish they packaged it better for shipping. You’d figure if spend so much money on a product they would try to ship it to you in pristine condition

This book is meant to be used for a person's betterment. It can function as a tangible field guide to training when you need a reference. It is also a work of art, representing a family's life's work and it could be kept as a collector's item. If you are looking for a gift for someone who values the honour and discipline of the practice/art, this book reflects the decades of work, innovation and heart of it's creators.

Very happy with book, extremely informative with detailed photos

When spending £100 on a new book you would like to think you are getting a mint condition one. Unfortunately mine had some of the pages folded over and also signs of wear on the sleeve. Thankfully Amazon were very helpful in resolving the issue. So, yeah, a great book for anyone with an interest in BJJ.
