The novel that inspired the classic horror film and the 2025 major motion picture starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Madelyn Cline. Four reckless teens fight to outsmart a brutal killer determined to avenge a young boy's death in this suspenseful thriller. After a party, four teens are in a hit-and-run accident that results in a young boy's death. Unable to deal with the consequences, they leave the body behind and make an anonymous phone call to the police, tipping them off. The group makes a secret pact to bury the memory of that night and never speak of it again, but when one of the girls receives a note that reads, "I know what you did last summer," their dark lie is unearthed. With twists and turns at every corner, they'll have to fight to stay steps ahead of a killer determined to make them pay. "Does anyone write scarier books than Lois Duncan? I don't think so." ―R.L. Stine, New York Times bestselling author of the Goosebump and Fear Street series Review: Fun - Great, nostalgic ya read. Review: Good - The story was easy to follow and read. You don't have to be a detective to i by ure out who the killer was. I knew from the start. The whole thing relied on kids that couldn't pay attention to anyone but themselves. Still and easy, enjoyable read.

This is not the movie or TV show was still brilliant
I recently watched the entire TV show I know what you did last summer And I wanted to watch the 3 movies and this was on sale so I just decided to get it. One thing I did find out after reading the end of this book, the movie was not what the author wanted she didn't even know what was being made and she hated it. I have it seen it in years and that's why I want to watch it but now going into it at least I know it's nothing to like. Also Lois edited this book from the original 1970s version. This also isn't like the Amazon Prime TV show that was cancelled. Four teenagers Julie, Ray, Helen and Barry are All living with a secret that happens the summer before. They made a packed never just speak of it and not go to the police with what they know. Well Summer That secrets coming back to haunt them. Someone has found out what they did leaving messages and stalking them. Helen is TV star on news station, Julie's going to be going to college, Ray's back from California after running away and Barry's at college now but they aren't safe from what's happening because the person has tracked them down and is making their lives miserable. There is not the movie or TV show as I said. So no blood bath but I still enjoyed it so much. Julie and Ray were my favorites. I guessed the twist that was near end too. I don't know how but just did. Was perfect ending.

Much better than the movie
I loved the twists in the book and seeing things from each of the main characters’ points of view. The story was great and would have made a great movie , too bad Hollywood changed so much of it.

Suspenseful book!
I am reading this book with my daughter for her summer reading for school. She doesn't like to read much, but she likes this one. It's very suspenseful and there are lots of plot twists. Much better than the movie!

pretty good
When I noticed this book my first reaction was surprise - I never knew the movie was based on a book. And the book is a lot better than the movie. Overall this is a pretty good book. But… there are a couple problems with it that keep it from true greatness. First big problem is that this book was obviously written in the 70s and then tweaked to set it more recently. And that has the effect of a movie with obvious dubbed lines inserted into it. Not a fatal flaw but a flaw. The bigger problem is how it ends. It doesn’t have an ending as much as it just ends. It isn’t as fulfilling as it might have been. Still, it’s good. Not great but good.

Kind of leaves you holding a back of crap
While the book did have a cool twist it ended so abruptly and unresolved that I had to double check I didn’t scroll ahead too much. A good read for young adults and it did keep my interest alive I just thought so much more could have been done with the idea. And it needed a proper ending.

Tense and packed full of suspense.
I absolutely loved this. I remember getting goose bumps when I was reaching the end of the story and had figured out what was happening. Tense, full of suspense, I first read this in my mid teens, when I was still waiting for life to happen. The characters all seemed so cool and I would have loved to have been a part of their crowd before the accident. Midnight picnics, teenage romance, cars, beer and smoking pot, it all seemed so exciting and daring. Pretty tame compared to how my latter teenage years turned out! I downloaded the Kindle version recently and although I enjoyed reading it again, I was very disappointed to discover that it had been updated. In my opinion, this never works, the book was written in the seventies and should have been left there. Any reader should be able to appreciate that it was written a long time ago and be able to adjust to that time period for the duration of the book. The film adaptation was quite simply dire and only loosely based on the original story. This story should still appeal to teenagers today and is well worth a read.

Completely different from the movie!
If you're a fan of the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, this book is completely different. The only characters that are in the book that are also in the movie are Helen, Julie, Barry, Ray & Elsa. Everyone else is different. There is no fisherman. I have to admit though, I Know What You Did Last Summer is my favorite movie so I had to get the book it was based on, and I'm glad I did. The plot and everything is so much different so hopefully you don't expect the same as the movie. It was a great book though and a quick read, I finished this in 2 days, I couldn't stop turning the pages! The only bad thing I have to say about the book is that the ending sucked. Lois Duncan cuts the book off too quickly after the climax of the book which was the only disappointing part of this book, but I would definitely suggest reading this!
