I had been using a 2T hard drive from the same people but it is not portable, too big & heavy. I decided to go for the benefits of a small & neat SSD especially as I was buying a new PC which has an inbuilt SSD. I keep my old HD fully backed up but switched off. If I did get a wipe-out attach at least a have a "vault" copy. I tried to register the SSD online but it was not recognised. I contacted WD and they tried but failed to register it for me. A few days later they came back and said that they had proof it was a legitimate WD device and they registered it on their records for me. A load of firms would just wash their hands. Quite please with it all - except that the data cable is far too short & it sits too high on the PC. The bonus is that it now has good airflow, as SSD's can really heat up.

Nice little USB drive, works fine and transfer rates seem entirely reasonable within a few ticks of the advertised speeds. Physically quite attractive in nice red finish I selected. Could have done with a better/longer cable, and you are paying a little extra for the Western Digital brand name.

I connected the ssd drive to my laptop to use Time Machine, backup software. After TM did the formatting, it was ready for backup. Initially, I had some trouble restarting Time Machine and connecting to ssd so I had to reboot the laptop to get it to work again. However, once it began backing up, it was impressively fast—160 GB in just an hour. The drive did become quite hot during the process, which is a bit concerning. Overall, I'm pleased with its performance, but I'm worried about potential mounting issues or damage due to the heat it generates.

This would allow us to automatically back up the required programs each week at a certain time. When it arrived we plugged it in and followed the instructions, to set it up. Unfortunately it did not back up the programs that we were using. However I contacted WD. I had to fill a lot of information on their site before we could get to the problem. (Which I realised why later) After which I was amazed that I had a phone call from them. With his help we cleared everything I had done and started again. The guy was very patience and talked me through how to set it up and more. I checked the day after it was set the backup, which it had He followed it up with an email a few days later to see if all was ok, which it had. I recommend this product and the support which I received was brilliant. Tremendous service/support.

What can I say about this amazing hard drive, it downloads games fast, it runs the games smoothly and it's compact enough so it doesn't get in the way like the big hard drives commonly seen. Very pleased.

I'm really pleased with this SSD. I got it at a greatly reduced price, I don't know why, the red ones were much cheaper. The reason for 4 stars not 5 is because I wouldn't pay the full price for it. I'd get a WD external HDD. It is extremely small, great if you want to carry it around with you. It is extremely fast, but for my use at least the actual speed experienced is limited by the cables, ports and the other device it's connected to, especially when backing up my laptop. It will plug directly into your phone with a USBC cable, and it really is very fast to back up your entire photo gallery or whatever you want from the phone flash memory. For making continuous or frequent / daily backups I prefer an HDD for reliability and repeated re writing. I have had several Crucial SATA SSDs fail catastrophically causing much stress and inconvenience, so I am still a bit wary of SSDs and prefer an HDD for reliability. The software that comes with this SSD is good. In particular the WD supplied software includes Acronis True Image for backing up and cloning your data, which you can use for free so long as you have a WD drive connected. The software works fine with a WD MyPassport external HDD that is over 10 years old.
