In this age of "make them all in China", Mitutoyo insists on Made in Japan, which I highly applaud. Mitutoyo is the equivalent of Starrett, which also insists on Made in the USA, except Starrett products are way too expensive, like Snap-on tools (some Starretts are now made in China and have horrible reputation). The price was a bit higher than was in Japan (additional $20 or so), but for this quality it is still a bargain and I considered the additional cost as shipping. I wanted a digital version but they are a lot more expensive so I went for this analog ver. If you need a precision instrument, I wouldn't cheap out on made in China; go with Mitutoyo or Starrett. Some Starrett products (assume low-end products) are now made in China and they have horrible reputation. Starrett is no longer my option and I'll stick to Mitutoyo, unless Mitutoyo tries to cheap out by made in China like everyone else.
