How does this vacuum perform on hard floors?  Does it blow pet hair around and scatter crumbs?

I've had this vacuum for almost 2 years now, and it doesn't work well on hard floors. The roller brush doesn't have an "off" setting so it kicks stuff out from under the vacuum. In addition, the suction has always seem to be a bit low. I just flipped it over to take apart the head and do some maintenance, and I found tons of dust packed in edges and cavities in the head, as well as a lot of large grains of dirt and salt (I live in NY, so I get salt tracked in in the winter time). The dirt and salt just slid out as if I was pouring out my pockets after being at the beach all day. This makes me think the vacuum has really low suction since it can't actually get the debris consistently to the vacuum nozzle at the side of the head.
Save your money by spending a little more on a higher suction vacuum.

Does this have soft bristles that wont frays ends of the carpet when vacuuming and when up right does the roller shut off?

Brush does not shut off unless you turn off vacuum.  I haven't noticed any fray to my carpets.  The brush  does not have soft bristles.  This vacuum does a great job on both carpet and hard surfaces and it is very easy to push around.  It is plastic which makes it lightweight.  I'd rather be careful with a lightweight vacuum than push around a metal unit which can wear me out.
