You Can't Go Wrong with Planters
Ever since I was a kid, Planters has sold great quality nuts of all kinds. They're never too dry, and their prices are reasonable, depending on the nut. They test fresh for canned nuts, with a great, natural texture. I always know I'm going to get good quality food when I purchase this brand.

These Use To Be My Favorite, But….
This use to be my favorite and my “go to” pecan’s for snacking on while watching TV or a mid-day snack before lunch or dinner. I decided to try a competitor and now the competitor has won me over. These are very good and always fresh. I have purchased these for years as a snack and I still love them. They are great and I can’t say anything bad about them. The only thing that I have found is that occasionally I have gotten the bitter part in the pecan and it’s not a bad taste, but for the price, I would think that you shouldn’t get any of the bitter flavor from the pecan that is part of the shell that’s soft and has a bitter taste to it. However, I would still recommend these for pecan lovers. Unfortunately for Planters, I decided to try the mammoth variety that their compilation Fisher has started marketing and they are very good at a lower price point than Planter’s. I generally prefer the Planters Deluxe version because they are better quality and larger in size. They also cost more money, but you get what you pay for. One of the biggest drawbacks for the Fisher Brand is that my husband is on a low sodium diet and Planters has a few different salt free varieties of their snack sized containers of nuts. So, I’ll never completely abandon the Planters brand, but my current favorite as far as salted pecans are the ones that Fisher has started selling. My husband is a 7th generation Texan and he is a huge pecan fan. His father had one tree that grew a variety of pecan called “Podsednic” which are the largest he says he has ever seen. They had several varieties on their land and they basically grew them for themselves and the community that he grew up in. He doesn’t think the Fisher nuts are that variety, but he was impressed with the size of them. His father could graft trees and they always took without a problem. They had pecan trees that grew two or three different varieties of pecans. He even had a fruit tree he had done grafts on that grew plums and peaches. He won a Blue Ribbon for growing the smallest pecan in Texas. My husband tried his hand at grafting a few times and we had the help of a botanist that was a good friend and they never took. So I guess it’s just something you can or cannot do. His father tried to teach him how to do grafting successfully and he still couldn’t get them to take. We actually have unsalted pecans that we buy at the grocery store by Fisher and they are the only ones that he will buy for cooking. We generally drive out to the various growers and buy them directly from the grower’s. However the last two cold winters, the first one a record breaking winter, and the drought has made the few growers that still have pecans for sale rather expensive. Unfortunately, some of the growers have lost whole groves of trees and their main source of income. We still buy from local growers to keep them in business and they are extremely happy to see people enjoying their harvest. The pecan tree is the Texas state tree, and it’s really hard to see the devastation that climate change has created for these growers. Many of them are multigenerational farms that have been around longer than anyone alive. It’s heartbreaking to see how much has changed in the 26yrs that I’ve lived in Texas. Not to get too political, but I personally think our Governor should have put a moratorium on home building several years ago. We don’t have the power grid to support the additional homes nor do we have the water to supply the ever growing population demand. The local lake levels are the lowest I’ve ever seen in my 26yrs of living in this great state. Water is going to be more expensive than gas in the future if we don’t stop building so many new subdivisions. Planters will always be a great product and my favorite brand of nuts because of the variety they offer and the quality of their products that is the best in my opinion. They still provide a great product and a five star rating for their line of products.
