I didn't have high hopes for this but I was very surprised. Shocked would be a good word also. I opened the box it came in and placed it at a spot where my cat scratches the carpet. This area is well away from the living room down a hallway. And within minutes my cat had to go investigate this new intrusion to her space. She immediately took to scratching on it. And like other who have posted here. She not only scratches it she also lays across it. Since I have got this my cat has had no interest in scratching my furniture. How long this will last? don't know.UPDATE: 1/5/2018It's been almost 2yrs since I purchased this and my cat has scratched the heck out of it. More important, she hasn't touched my new, now 2yrs old furniture I had just purchased. This has been such a great purchase I just ordered a new one. I've attached the first one I purchased. We bought this to replace Murray's Emery Cat. This device is Murray Approved, and the old Em'ryCat (plastic holder and all) has been discarded....What, you're not convinced yet?OK, so maybe you're thinking, 'It's cardboard, right? What's the big deal that it should cost that much?' Yeah, it's cardboard, but it's a dense type of cardboard, and the block of it is pretty darn solid right out of the box, like it's the Bruce Lee of cardboard. Perhaps you're an Em'ryCat owner, and you're wondering, 'Can it sand-down the cat's claws like an Em'ryCat?' Actually yes, because the Em'ryCat didn't actually sand down your cat's claws as much as you probably think (or for very long). And perhaps you ponder, 'does it come with extras, like a plastic holder, slot for a toy wand, or free catnip?" It doesn't need a plastic holder, you never used the toy slot anyway, and free catnip? Really? Do you know how old that stuff usually is? Nope, and you really don't need those things with this scratcher.As a former Em'ryCat owner, I admit, was a little skeptical too. However, I needed to get something for Murray, because his Em'ryCat was so worn out that he wasn't using it anymore. And so... I bought one for us, and am glad I did. When we opened it, it didn't unleash a pile of emery sand all over the floor. I wasn't sad if free catnip was missing. It doesn't need a plastic tray because it doesn't shed emery dust as it's used. The cardboard is strong and tightly packed, so catnip doesn't fall through it when you sprinkle it on (I'm sure it's another reason the Em'ryCat used to go in a tray), and it has already withstood three weeks of Murray's 5-minute morning workouts with barely any signs of having been used.I can't say for sure how long it will last, but we're already very satisfied with the product. She loves this thing and it must feel really good on her paws. Before this scratcher I was reading up on cat behavior, trimmed her paws once a week, looked into soft paws (caps). She wasn't clawing for attention or other reasons, just playfulness and excitement. My new sofa must have an appealing texture for claws? I have a big scratching post/tower in another room that she loves but found that she needed an additional scratcher near where we hang out most.Okay, here's what I did. Put this scratcher next to wherever your kitty's clawing has been problematic. You can move it around to find the best spot plus it has a low profile, it's not ugly, and works with mod/minimal interior design. I put it on the floor, scratched at it, kitty jumps on and starts scratching. I praise her excessively in the Kitty Voice, place one treat on the scratcher. Repeat. So she got a couple treats and praise back to back the first time. Later that day she got one treat and praise whenever she proactively used it.Now three weeks in she gets praise every single time and maybe a treat once a day, always placed ON the scratcher to reinforce the message. She likes to sit and lounge on it too which is really cute, occassional attacks it and murders it with her back claws.
