Trails of Prince Edward Island Review: Small province, surprising possibilities... - Prince Edward Island is the smallest of the Canadian provinces, and perhaps best known outside Canada as the home of the fictional "Anne of Green Gables". It turns out, however, that PEI has a lot to offer in the way of outdoor recreation. "Trails of Prince Edward Island" is a wonderful introduction to the biking, hiking and walking trails of the province. Author Michael Haynes identifies 56 separate trails for the enterprising traveler. Most of the offerings are segments of the Confederation Trail, which has been completed on PEI and runs end to end on the island through a fascinating variety of landscapes. Each trail entry offers distances and details on surfaces, facilities and things to see. Each entry has a sketch map that is probably sufficient for most navigation purposes. The book includes a nice selection of color photographs, lots of helpful hints on the local plant and animal life, and some low-key coaching for beginning walkers and hikers. Highly recommended.
