    That Dark and Bloody Ground

The Shawnees and the Cherokees associated themselves in both resistance and brutality. Daniel Boone is in a chapter by reference only; readers looking for information about "Dannel" would not need to read this book. As far as the life and times of Hannah Fowler, the way her father died, styles of courtship, Indian threats, the trials of weather, and animal husbandry, Janice Giles proves to be a genuine historian who happens to be telling the personal narrative of a fictional character. This is the enjoyable novel that has given away since the 1950s to fluff and dare I say political correctness. Editors and publishers everywhere should bring this style of craftsmanship back.If the book does have a flaw or two, it may be in the dialogue, with all of the "H'it"s and "allus"s and folksy misspellings. I believe all of the pioneers to have had an intellectual quality that, for one, did not melt down all speakers to the same colloquialisms and also did not reduce dialogue to simple philosophy or routine observations. Tice and Hannah and their two married neighbors may appear too industrious and angelic to fit into those rough Kentucky times. Giles is correct to show how tireless and cooperative the main characters are. Near the end of the book, with all they had been through, I feel the pioneer spirit has, or should have had, another side. Not having read any other Giles at this point, I can promise I will. It is worth noting that a novel about a heroine and about roles, about defying and changing roles, does not automatically equate to a woman who defies marriage, her husband, or her sexuality. Not just a survivor, Fowler is a hero in more ways that one. What she had accomplished before chapter 20 takes on a new shape that speeds up the conclusion of the book.

This is a wonderful story. It’s about a pioneering woman braving the wilds of Kentucky. I’m so pleased with the condition of this book and the price.
