They expect the perfect movie every time they pay their money to be entertained beyond all expectations, without a shred of understanding of what actually goes on in making a piece of art like this. And when they DON'T get it, they make the mistake of confusing their own boredom and lack of vision for the art they just watched being "not this" or "not that". It's ridiculous because their diatribes end up thwarting movie fans from actually taking a chance on films like this. The fact is, this sequel is PERFECT. The first LE was, admittedly, part of the whole found footage bandwagon. However, while low-budget and a little shaky on the directing, it was a fun movie. In retrospect, I think it was a brilliant movie, especially now that we have Part II. And I'm glad they decided to title it "Part II", because just calling it TLE 2 doesn't do it justice. It actually IS the second part of a story of the "beginning of the end". I think where people get a little irritated is that they aren't spoon fed their backstory and character development. I think the major difference in this film is the acting. The acting is actually really well done for this budget film. I believed the characters, wholeheartedly. But, overall, this movie is shot differently, written differently, directed differently, and it does exactly what it's supposed to do: put in you into a different frame of mind for the second half of this awesome story. You aren't given a lot of information on purpose. You kind of just "wake up" like Nell does and you're just as in the dark as Nell is. There are a lot of jump scares in the beginning , because it IS a horror film and you need to give the picky-pants something to pay for, but I noticed that they kind of started at the beginning and ended towards the middle, giving you a perfect segway from first to second movie (if watched back to back), which I believe is what should be done. Honestly, I love these two movies together more than I love them individually. And the ending while a little quick, is very inventive and fun. You actually end up rooting for...well, watch it. If you can, watch the first one, then watch this. It's FUN! Let the nay-sayers keep nay saying. I have the first one in the series which is a good movie. But I heard the not so great reviews on the sequel. But I watched it and thought that the reviews were a bit critical. I liked 2 and sure it's not the same as the shock value that always comes with a new story. But it is a very good follow up to the first. And still had the same lead actor to continue forward. If watched back to back as a series is done it's all good. I guess at the time I just wanted my girlfriend to be clinging all over me and it worked because she absolutely hates movies like this and ends up having bad nightmares every time she watches one. But this movie also messed with me a little bit, I swore I was seeing things, like little demons lerking around the corners when walking to and from the bathroom.
