Since I would be immobilizing the distal joint for several weeks, I first tried a thumb brace that surrounded my hand with fabric and immobilized my thumb using an enclosed metal splint and Velcro straps. The brace worked very well, but quickly became dirty (very noticeable because I wrongly chose a pink color). It was also quite inconvenient. I am retired and spend a lot of time with gardening and backyard chicken keeping. Frequent handwashing is a must. I searched for a thumb stabilizer that could stay on during showering and hand washing. I found this, along with copycat versions. AIthough quite expensive, I chose the made in USA brand after reading many reviews. Here are a couple of good-to-knows I've learned. How you wear the brace depends on your condition. I used that and ordered a set of 3 sizes to accommodate swelling. Unfortunately for me, my thumb size fell on 8. Ordering sizes 7/8/9 would have been optimal; however that choice was not available. The company is not kidding when they indicate that the micro-swelling can result in an entirely different size. I found that I woke up every morning with a bit of swelling sufficient to cause the size 8 to be uncomfortable. I was relegated to the old cloth brace for a couple hours each morning. I measured my trigger thumb joint with a tailor’s measuring tape (and also with a dental floss) and the measurement corresponds to size 5 in the size chart. However, it is so small that it can’t even slip onto my thumb. I ended up with size 8 for comfortable wear and it does prevent the thumb joint from bending. Albeit size 8 does slip on occasion I think it’s more important not to restrict blood flow for prolonged wear. Size 7 fits snugly but it feels somewhat restrictive. Note that your fingers will expand and contract throughout the day depending on your environment, activities, physiological fluctuations, etc. so you might want to use 2 different sizes accordingly. The oval-8 splint is great to use when your hands will get wet or dirty. Its low profile will allow wearing cleaning gloves as usual. When there’s no need to handle water or dirt, I find wearing a sleeve created from elastic bandage wrap with a clip the most comfortable. The one in the image has about 3 layers and does prevent joint bending.
