Cut it to the size of your sump pit, in fact use a couple layers - they won't slow down your circulation. Take them out every month or two and hose them off, preferable where the runoff will flow into your flower beds. The flowers will benefit from the fish emulsion. I also got a bag of bio-balls that I laid on top of the filter pads. When I take them out to hose off, they have very little junk in them compared to the filter pads.
