Robert Taylor (Quo Vadis) and Stewart Granger (The Prisoner of Zenda) team up in this "grim, fierce, raw-boned outdoor fare" (Variety) filmed on location in rugged Custer State Park, North Dakota. Charlie Gilson (Taylor), a mean-spirited hunter, joins reserved Sandy McKenzie (Granger) on a great government-sanctioned buffalo hunt that will keep the buffalo population under control and make the men rich. Joining them are Woodfoot, an old one-legged skinner (Lloyd Nolan) and Jimmy (Russ Tamblyn) a half-Indian boy. But trouble begins to break the team apart when Charlie kills a group of Indians whom he accuses of stealing his horses. Charlie's subsequent mistreatment of the lone survivors -- an Indian woman and her child -- forces Sandy to realize that his partner is consumed with hate and that he enjoys killing more than just buffalo. "Raw, real and rugged" (L.A. Examiner), The Last Hunt is so intense and powerful that its stark images will stay with you long after the film ends. Review: Great quality - I bought this for my dad because he had been looking for it for a while. He was so thankful at the way that it was packaged. Review: A personal favorite - The LAST HUNT has been a personal favorite of mine for a long time now. I've had it on VHS since shortly after it was first released thereon, and recently decided I'd get it on DVD. The story line is solid, the actors very good (Robert Taylor shines playing a really bad guy), and the little child in the picture is a perfect scene stealer. The movie's about the last of the buffalo hunts in the old west (set ca. 1883). And I have to admit that the authenticity of the picture is enhanced by the filming of the annual thinning of the buffalo in Custer State Park.

A great forgotten western
The Last Hunt is one of those Westerns that somehow has gotten lost.It is a story of a time, when loosing sight of the roof-tops,was dangerous. The isolation,of the plains, bleeds men of moral behavior.Robert Taylor is Charley. In town he is bearable. On the prairie, where the town and laws and rules of the town are lost,Charley looses the decency and reason that makes folks civilized. The Last Hunt is a great western. The systematic killing of the buffalo, which looks easy and real, looks that way because the buffalo killed during the making of this movie, were actually killed to thin down native herds in South Dakota. The killing of the buffalo provides a surreal cinematic backdrop,to a story of good guys and bad guys trying to disguise what is natural within them. This film should be on DVD for the following reasons: 1)Robert Taylor's performance is his best--ever 2)Look at South Dakota in the 1950's 3)Lloyd Nolan, some of his best stuff 4)Debra Paget--tries real hard to be the same "girl next door" indian debutante that made the us's of the 1950's--fall head over heal,in love with her. 5)Death of the young indian boy, shot,in a rigged gunfight with Taylor's character. It is over a white buffalo skin. The indian considers it sacred.Taylor considers the skin to have monetary value.Taylor shoots the boy easily--It is powerful and pitiful. 6)Russ Tamblyn--always tops

A Bi-Polar Western
It has a very good cast, but Taylor is such a vicious bad guy, its uncomfortable to watch. I wish I had just rented it because I doubt I will watch it again. If you can stand Taylor’s psychotic character, then fine, but I don’t want a repeat experience of it.

The Last Hunt
Excellent Western from the 1950s. It takes place during the waning days of the conflicts between whites and the Native Americans. Two men decide to go on an extensive buffalo hunt in order to diminish the herds so the Natives will starve. One hunter is a rabid racist who captures an Indian woman and the baby in her charge after killing her male relatives. The other hunter has respect for Indians because he lived among them, and undergoes a crisis of conscience because of the wholesale buffalo killing and decides to liberate the woman and child. Robert Taylor plays the racist, Stewart Granger plays the other hunter. Lloyd Nolan plays the wise old buffalo skinner, Russ Tamblyn plays the half-breed boy along to help, and Debra Paget plays the Indian woman. All give fine performances, but Robert Taylor is absolutely scary as the racist. The DVD-R is excellent quality. Highly recommended for Western fans.

Dead-on accurate movie about the great buffalo hunts! Not bad for the 1950s!
To date, the only feature film strictly about the great buffalo hunts of the 1870s-80s. The film is very well done for it's time. They took pains to set the time period as Montana in 1883 (stating that Custer died 7 years ago), the last year of the great hunts. Firearms are correct; an 1874 Sharps and an 1876 Winchester Centennial model (probably in .45-60, which was enough to bring down a buffalo.) Hunting, skinning and cartridge reloading processes are shown or explained. The shopping for supplies was dead on. Someone did their homework for this one. Curiously, there has not been a movie about the buffalo hunts since then. I hope that will change soon!

One of the best westerns of the 1950's.Robert Taylor's part is out of character to his matinee idol roles but he plays the part extremely well. All the stars act well in an unusual western played out against the dying days of the buffalo hunter. The shooting of the buffalos actually ocurred due to a cull in the herds which was normal at that time.May not be to all tastes but it has always been one of my alltime favorite westerns.

Wir mögen diesen Film sehr. Die Schauspieler sind toll und die Landschaftsaufnahmen sind wirklich beeindruckend. Auf der BluRay gibt es ein MakingOf, das wirklich interessant ist. Also eine klare Kaufempfehlung!
