Did anyone get a burning smell from the babycakes multi treat maker?

A burning smell is normal for any type of similar appliance. Usually it says this in the instructions. Make a small batch to throw away. Sometimes two batches. But the smell will go away!

Are the cupcakes mini- size, or full size?

they are in between full and mini size. about 2 1/8 to 2 1/4 inches across the widest part. it is a great size for me or my 5 year old to not feel too bad about having 2.

what size of cupcake bake cup or liner should I use for this multi treat baker? can I just buy liner that says "mini baking cup" on the package?

I just bought the mini liners, but then decided go go with someone else's advice about not using a liner at all. They come out amazing with no liner at all!

how do you clean the cooking plates?

They are non-stick. Just use warm soapy water. I'm sure they are fine in a hot dishwasher too.
