That's protection.Couple things I don't like, I don't like the ear loops as they seem to not be in alignment with the velcro strap. and the nosepiece is not like the picture it's actually chrome, and personally for me it interferes with my glasses to the point I actually have to take them off as they don't sit right on my nose.
