The other side of it was finding the best hatchet or axe to use for multiple tasks. with this tool you can brake in or out of some place, you could assemble and dissemble an entire camp site with this tool, dig holes easily (I have done this a few times now). A big deal for me was finding a tomahawk I could easily use two hands on as well as use single handedly at my differing availability, Gerber has provided that product. I also have the small Bear Grylls hatchet from Gerber, coupled with this which fits and stays in my survival/camping bag, theres nothing I can't get done. Big jobs and small, they both do incredible work and make my most my tasks short lived obstacle's in comparison with to many other products. When they designed this hawk it was designed with breaching in mind so it was built to stand up to abuse, right off the bat this is the first and one of the most important details. It is a FULL TANG tomahawk, (so don't pay any mind to the review commenting on the loose axe head, apparently a rip off or totally different product), and it has a wonderful weight balance, although it has a good size to it you are able to comfortably choke up on the head for fine wood work. The butt flairs out a bit, slowly, as you move from the axe and hammer head down to the nail puller on the end of the crow bar. Lets say this little jammie packs the punch of a regular wood axe in the package of beautifully crafted tomahawk that makes you makes you feel safer just having. One that includes Gerber's full lifetime warranty, which they have a phenomenal track record with. I am a loyal Gerber customer. I have many, many products and to this day, at age 22, I can't say any one has ever let me down. But to be fair it took me close to two months of watching reviews, looking over pictures and reviews of this product, the Boker "Tomahook", and CRKT's T-hawk, not in that particular order. But this girl came out on top. The Gerber Downrange Tomahawk, She's a BEAST. I also own or have owned the SOG Fasthawk both smaller and larger sizes, Bear Grylls Gerber Hatchet, Easting hatchet, coleman camp hatchet, Fiskars/Gerber wood axe full size, and the Schrade survival tomahawk (not the one with fire starter but a crow bar similar to the reviewed tomahawk). The only one's that are good at all are the Gerber's, all three are perfect for their intended purpose, the Schrade tomahawk is a great substitute if the gerber downrange is too expensive in all honesty, SOG's are good for throwing but not at all a survival option in my opinion. Not quite either one. It can cut a log but your hands will be aching pretty bad from using it to cut a log. It can tear open doors pry open drop doors and vehicle hood and trunks/boots. I even buried mine in a guy's head once and it went straight through the top of his head, out his bottom jaw and into his sternum. But using it to do anything but breaching and killing is not advisable, it really is just a raid and murder tool after all. I would suggest buying a small hatchet if you are needing to baton camp fire wood or an axe for splitting logs and copping down trees. Search for "camping axe" or "camping hatchet". Tomahawks are for slaying people. **Q: Is it made in China?** A: The box it came in said it was made in USA. But no where on the tool itself is it stamped. I bought a Gerber knife also and it was marked Made in CHINA on that box. **Q: Does anyone carry this as a breaching tool on duty? i'm an leo looking for feedback on it's usefullnes as a breaching tool.** A: Carried it with narcotics and swat. Crow bar decent fixed blade knife etc will work. **Q: How good is this for 1st responders?** A: I have been a paramedic for 8 yrs. I own one of these. It is an awesome tool! I must admit though that I have only used it twice at work. Both times I used it as a pry tool to open a problematic side door on an ambulance. I own the gerber down range tomahawk too and had it on hand as well but choose the Ding Dong because it required a lot of force to pry the metal door open and I was afraid I might bend the slimmer tomahawk. It worked great! Outside of work I used it once to help my fiancé. She was moving out of her house to move in with me and she locked herself out of her place. Again I used the Ding Dong as a pry tool to open the door. It easily pushed the door open. I was able to gain access to the residence without badly damaging the door frame.The hammer end is great too. Only really used it smash up a lot of no good old furniture though.The handle rings are great and do help you to not slip. The cuts in the hammer head do give it some bite but don't expect it to just rip chunks out of whatever you hit.All in all, I think it is a great entry tool for light to medium doors. Heavy duty doors and especially thick metal doors will probably give you some trouble and take more work/effort. Be careful trying to beat in something ridiculous solid. I took a swing at a piece of solid old school wood for furniture, a dresser, and it bounced off and damn near hit my head. I felt the handle touch my hair. Could have cracked my skull. So be careful, you can tear down house walls and can bust rocks and cinder block with it but it is not the hammer of Thor.I think it is a great entry tool. If you are PD or do a lot of door breaching it is awesome. As a paramedic I really don't do any door breaching at all. If I did this would be a "go to" tool.
