Most complete book I've read for Substitute Teachers
Pros: I bought a couple of books about this topic and I think this one covers more aspects of the Substitute Teaching than any other, that's why I rate it 5 stars. This one is my favorite! Most teachers say Behavior Management is one of the hardest aspects of teaching, so the principles of human behavior and all the psychological part of it is briefly presented in a very clear way in this book. It not only suggests how to handle a student but how the substitute should conduct herself. I also learned a lot from The 'Teaching Strategies' and 'Special Education' chapters. The checklists for the professional substitute are very helpful and I love LOVE that there's fill-in activities for every subject. Plus, they're reproducible. I recommend this book for any first year teacher and of course, for anyone subbing for the first time. It would also be a good resource that a regular teacher could leave accessible when she's absent so that her substitute can use the fill-in activities and other forms provided in the book. A second and a third book I would recommend in case you want to read others: "The organized Teacher's Guide to Substitute Teaching" by Steve Springer and "Substitute Teaching from A to Z" by Barbara Pressman. Cons: I think that the "Substitute Teacher Handbook" is more for those working with grades 2-6. So if you sub mostly for Kindergarten or High School... I'm not sure...

Lots of helpful information here and well organized for future reference.
This book was recommended by the Kelly Services and I found it to be very helpful as I began my substitute teaching this year. The book is well organized and it will be very useful throughout the school year.

Great for elementary school kids; greatly lacking for the higher grade levels.
The activities are largely geared toward 2nd-4th grade children, though some have wider appeal out and a few are somewhat adaptable. None of the activities, in my experience, are appropriate for middle or high schoolers, or even marginally bright upper elementary school kids. It's also important to note that the vast majority of these aren't proper "assignments"; they're busy-work that require little or no context. Also, much of it requires prep work on the teacher's part, such as a trip to the copyroom, or gathering supplies -- which doesn't sound like a big deal, until you realize how little notice substitutes often get before being called in to teach. Overall, I found it had its uses, but don't count on it to get you out of the hot seat if the teacher you're subbing for neglected to leave a lesson plan.

Does the job
Some of the book seems too complicated other parts too simple. The school used a movie that goes with this book so I bought it.

An awesome handbook to use for fillers
An awesome handbook to use for fillers. I have taught special need students for a total of 14 years in two different states. In Ga ( 9 yrs in elementary and 2 yrs in middle school and in Va ( 3 yrs) of high school and I wish I had this as a back up to give to my substitutes. Many thanks, Debbie

Great source book for teachers!
This book is not only good for substitute teachers--it's good for any teacher! It is full of activities for teachers to use as sponge activiites. These are things you can just run off on the copier for the kids to do that are fun, but educational. There is also some good advice for substitute teachers (which are good reminders for all teachers).

...Not much new in 13 years.
I purchased this book 13 years ago, while subbing during chopped up Air National Guard training. Although the cover is new, all the contents of the 7th edition are identical to the old one I had (not sure which edition it was...got rid of long ago). The contents are useful, don't get me wrong, I guess for $24.00 I really expected a bit more bang for my buck.
