It's like a vinyl covering that looks like marble. The only thing I don't like about them is that they don't have rounded corners so they're easy to nail with your leg. Also since they are black if you bounce them into anything. Even putting them into holder. It takes the black coating off of it and you can see the wood underneath.when you get them you do have to put together the holder it's in pieces. Goes together really easy. Has picture diagram. However the bolt covers it came with just fall out. I don't mind seeing black screws but other people might.Side note: Also if you're trying to use this with a laser mouse for your computer the laser mouse does not read on it. So you will need a mousepad. But I'm very happy with them specially for the price.
