What is the core made of? I've had a lot of rollers that break

The core seems to be hard plastic or pvc......no problems and we use it everyday.

What is the black foam made of? Why does it stink so badly? The handles are clearly rubber (a natural product), but the black foam appears toxic.

Thank you for your question. This is Tiger Tail USA - the manufacturer of the product. I am also the owner and founder responding directly. Our handles are actually NOT rubber. They are made from a specially formulated elastomer with zero added latex. We do not use naturally occurring rubber because of latex. The most famous source of natural latex is the rubber tree. Unfortunately, latex causes many allergic reactions so we do not use natural rubber. As far as the black foam goes, we use an advanced, specially formulated, non-phthalate,   thermoplastic compound that has no naturally occurring or added toxins like neoprene, benzothiazoles, carba chemicals, thiurams, etc. We have chosen our materials and suppliers very carefully and screen for toxins through product content tests - and have done so for the orange grips and black foam. Due to the nature of elastomers and thermoplastic compounds, there may be a slight scent that in our experience, dissipates very quickly. We know everyone is different and has different sensitivities, so if the scent you are experiencing still bothers you, you may return the product within the timeframe amazon allows for a full refund. The materials we use for our products help ensure our products do not break. In fact, I still have the very first Tiger Tail 18" roller I invented - and it looks AND PERFORMS the same now as it did way back in 2006. That's why I remain a huge fan of our suppliers and product components.

Question 3

Does it roll smoothly? Mine seems to have some friction - almost (but not quite) like a "thunking". Is this normal?

At first I thought the same thing but I have come to realize it is where My muscle is tightened up.  Kind of like going a speed pump. It rolls smoothly over where I am not having a problem. Hope this helps.
