Just Mercy (DVD)A powerful and thoughtprovoking true story, “Just Mercy” follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson). One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them.]]> Review: Essential Viewing! - Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2019 film, “Just Mercy,” tells the true story of Walter McMillian and Bryan Stevenson, who worked to appeal McMillian’s murder conviction. The film stars Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stevenson, Jamie Foxx as Walter McMillian, Brie Larson as Eva Ansley, Rob Morgan as Herbert Richardson, Tim Blake Nelson as Ralph Myers, Rafe Spall as Tommy Chapman, and Karan Kendrick as Minnie McMillian. The story begins with McMillian’s arrest for murder, showing how he was racially profiled from the beginning. He tries appealing his case, but has no successes. Later, Harvard law graduate Bryan Stevenson travels to Alabama to provide legal representation to those who cannot afford it. He and Eva Ansley found the Equal Justice Initiative before meeting with death row inmates. There, he meets McMillian and begins looking into his case. Despite facing hostility as they work, Stevenson and Ansley find proof of witness tampering and other irregularities in the prosecution against McMillian. They move for the case to be reopened, but a judge denies it. In a last-ditch attempt to highlight the injustices they’ve uncovered, Stevenson and McMillian go on 60 Minutes to rally public support. They successfully get the Supreme Court of Alabama to hear the case, where McMillian gets justice. The screenplay by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Lanham is perfectly structured to tell their story, while every actor perfectly embodies their role so that the film takes on a documentary-like quality. The film doesn’t shy away from showing the brutality of systemic racism, which makes it a powerful piece of art that can open audiences’ eyes to the structural inequality around them. Unlike films examining these issues in earlier historic periods, the relatively recent timeline of the film (beginning in 1989) helps to show that racism is not a problem of the past. In keeping with this goal, Warner Brothers made this film free to rent for June 2020, helping people to educate themselves about the racial inequality built into the criminal justice system. Review: Great drama movie - Great drama movie. Love the way Michael B. Jordan played the young attorney and took care of business for Jamie Foxx in the movie. Loved the movie!! A Great Story For A Great Film
Honestly, this is such a great story and well written script it would've been hard, and heartbreaking if the movie hadn't turned out great. But luckily the film did not disappoint! Well cast, well acted, and well told! I found myself tearing up at some random moments that might not have been meant to evoke such an emotional response, but did because of how real and provoking this story is. The small details put into the film that didn't really have to do directly with the case in the story but about the bigger picture, for example, when they kept the black people out of the court room so that they had to stand at the back of the room. Or when the people were walking through the metal detector and the white lady walked through, and then when the black lady walked through the dog immediately started viciously barking at her, because it was trained to. The fact that they re-elected the same sheriff, instead of arresting him for coercion, false arrest and a slew of other things he did wrong in this case (and I'm sure many others), even after this very public trial and overturning of his complete lie makes me absolutely sick. It's also another detail that made this hit that much harder! The fact that this is a true story, that something like this could happen and still happens in the USA today is astounding! Every part of this story, from the conviction, to the overturning of the conviction was so great and well done! And the icing is that there is no nudity, or sex, drugs, minimal violence, maybe a few swear words, but nothing too bad and it's definitely something that parents could watch with their teens, and talk about! I would 100% recommend watching this film!

Great Movie, Sad & Scary that Its A True Story & Not So Far Back In Our History
Great movie about an Awful Tue Story not so far back in our past. I was completing law school in the Midwest when this happened and did not know about it. No social media at that time so we were all dependent on mainstream media coverage choices. Happy to see the Attorney Bryan Stevenson receive his well earned, deserved and overdue recognition, accolades and respect he is due for his years of selfless work and sacrifice. Also happy for the increased attention this movie brings to the HUGE problem of wrongful convictions & how to many literally puts a person on Death Row Michael B Jordan’s portrayal of Attorney Bryan Stevenson is Oscar worthy in my book. His feelings of pain, humiliation, degradation yet defiance & focus on the end game/big picture were all intensely portrayed in his face & body without speaking a single syllable as he removed every piece of his clothing for a strip search before he was permitted to see his client. Jordan made me feel how it strengthened his resolve despite/in spite of the degradation imposed on him. Jamie Fox and the entire cast all played their roles exquisitely. Be prepared to shed tears. How anyone could watch this movie without tears & maybe a bit (or more) of anger irrespective of race unless they lacked the ability to empathize or were filled with hate. Despite the warnings of tears & discomfort, everyone should watch this movie. We need to be aware of what is happening in our country and communities.
