In the busy house of the Svennson family, everyone is getting ready for the Swedish holiday of Lucia Day, December 13 . The book tells the story of Santa Lucia through the eyes of three children in modern-day Sweden. It describes their giddy activities, brought to life in colorful, full-page illustrations, and also provides sheet music, recipes, and sewing patterns for the costumes traditionally worn by children on this day, when many Swedish people celebrate the legacy of Lucia and the coming of the light with coffee, saffron buns, ginger snaps, and wonderful singing. One of the most beloved and celebrated traditions of the Swedish people, Lucia Day also signifies that the Christmas holiday is getting close. Although the book is aimed at the 5- to 10-year-old age group, many parents and grandparents may enjoy reading it to younger children. Review: Darling - Edit: Itโs March and my two year old asks me every day if Santa Lucia Day is tomorrow! We still read this book several times per week. Itโs a hit! My kids love to read books that explain things well. This book does an excellent job explaining the gist of Santa Lucia Day through a story of three elementary age children in Sweden and their family. The story is illustrated beautifully. The story covers the history of why we celebrate the holiday as well as how we celebrate today and brings the light of Santa Lucia Day to those around us. It includes recipes and patterns for making the holiday happen at your home. This one is excellent! Review: Great for teaching about other cultures - I bought this daughter for the feast of St Lucy (Lucia day). It was the perfect tool for helping my daughter learn about the day and how another culture celebrates! Beautiful illustrations too.

Perfect introduction to the Santa Lucia tradition
We have Swedish relatives who brought my daughters Lucia gowns and crowns (lucky girls, they each got one!) This book was the perfect way to introduce the charming tradition of serving cookies and coffee to your family while singing and wearing the candle-wreath crown. Recipes are included, as well as a little history, lyrics and music in Swedish and English, and a pattern for the gowns. The story is contemporary, and the kids act like real kids with a touch of mischief.

Awesome book
I bought this book to explain St Lucia Day to my children as we live in the USA and this will be their first year celebrating the holiday. It does a good job explaining who she is at an age appropriate level as well as a cute little story about a swedish family. The best part though is the included recipes for the pepparkakor and the lussekatter (in cups!) as well as the english version of Santa Lucia AND a pattern instructions for the lucia gowns, star boy gown and the collar. Such a great little book for those without much knowledge or history of celebrating St Lucia.

Great book, arrived damaged
I loved the book, a cute and fun little story about a family in Sweden celebrating St. Lucia Day, making traditional saffron rolls with raisins and ginger cookies (pepparkakor)-then preparing the costumes, serving them with the coffee and cocoa, parading to visit and serve others. It even includes the song with sheet music and words In English as well as the original language, recipes for the food and patterns for the costumes! Thereโs a short history/legend piece and itโs not too long or disturbing as some legends tend to be (which is unnecessary and unhelpful to children). Itโs difficult to photograph the deep creases in the entire length and full body of the book. Both front and back covers and every page. I tried to bend it back, and it helped some-but it is permanent damaged-and so I had to take a star off the rating. I still want it-and donโt have time before the 13th to have it replaced, so Iโm keeping it. The quality inside, the content and images are all wonderful.

Celebration of Light
Liked the book's dialogue centered around the family preparing for Lucia Day in a realistic, casual way. Love how it included all the family members and the grandparents. Showed the care and love for all the members. Loved the recipes, song words and music and the pattern pieces to make the Lucia dresses and Starboy outfit.

Feels not quite good enough
This book would be a useful resource in a classroom studying different December festival traditions. It might also be useful in a Swedish heritage household which particularly wanted a text on St Lucia day. The facts and recipes at the back are useful. The text, however, it just not as elegant as I would like it to be. It doesn't have a pace or rhythm that I found easy to read. A shame.

Far exceeded my expectations!
With Grandparents now gone, traditions and the stories behind them get lost. This book is a great introduction to the tradition for Canadian born grandchildren. It is very extensive including the lore, songs, lyrics, foods and recipes, decorations and patterns for making Lucia gowns. Everything you could possibly need in one book. Much more than I expected.

Lovely book
This is a really beautiful book. The first part of the book is a story about a family and how they celebrate Lucia day. The second part of the book has recipes, a song and a simple lucia gown pattern in it.
