Not helpful unless you already work in medicine
This was not the basic information I needed to keep injured wildlife safe and comfortable until I can get them to a rehabilitator (nearest one is over an hour away and keeps narrow hours for calls and intake). I find injured deer, orphaned squirrels, injured songbirds and we have had foxes in need of ivermectin to treat mange. I was looking for a book that can give me basic advice on how to care for orphaned baby squirrels (how/what to feed, keep warm, ensure they have hydration using the right dropper so they don't inhale the liquid, etc.) for 1-2 days before I can get them to help. Same with opossum babies, injured songbirds, and foxes who hang around but need ivermectin placed in food to save them (animal control will not do it, they refer us to rehabilitators who then tell us how to set out food for a number of days with a certain dose of ivermectin in it...it would be nice to have that in print in a book I keep on hand).Anyway, this has very complicated directions for dosing and meds I have never heard of (I do not work in the field of medicine), equipment I do not have access to and descriptions that make my head spin. It may be practical but not for me!

Practical Wildlife Care
Yes ,I am glad I got it as I can now refer to it when I get a call about wildlife. I have rescued hedgehogs and bats etc and found it very difficult to access information on proper rehab care .Will now access the information from this book ,when occasion arises again. It clearly explains what to do and how to care for the creature,as well as how to protect oneself when on the job.

Perfect guide for working in a wildlife rehab center.
Perfect guide for working in a wildlife rehab center. Lots of great photos and descriptions. It's definitely a "keeper", I use the knowledge I've gained from this book every time I volunteer.

Practical book for ALL animal caretakers!
This is a great book to add to any wildlife rehabilitator's library. There is great procedural information that has helped me in different situations. This is NOT a book for people who are wanting to "rehabilitate" wildlife, it is for certified caretakers who already have basic knowledge of emergency care for injured creatures. I highly recommend this book!!

Wildlife Rehabilitation of British Species
Great book on wildlife rehabilitation with information that can be translated to the care of any species. Since I live in North America, it's more than I actually needed to know about the treatment of diseased wild hedgehogs. Nevertheless, I'd recommend it as an addition to any rehabilitators reference shelf.

Excellent book for aspiring wildlife care professionals
Bought this book to support a university course in Animal Health and Disease. Excellent book, lots of detailed applied content, perfect for anyone training for a career in animal rescue- vet nurses, RSPCA, veterinary assistants- this book is perfectly pitched for that demographic. The book is specific to British wildlife- badgers, hedgehogs, also a lot about birds- and describes UK wildlife protection laws- so may be of limited use to readers in other countries.

Bought for my girlfriend who likes to rescue animals from the side of the road etc. - mostly useful, but does go into some depth and provides information on medication - useful for the amateur animal lover, although probably aimed at the professional/someone studying veterinary - there are better books for the amateur such as the "St. Tiggywinkles Wildcare Handbook: First Aid and Care for Wildlife".

the Wildlife rescue textbook
This book is the recognised and recomended handbook for all wildlife rescuers. Les is one of the foremost authorities in the UK and with his years of experience the book contains everything you need to know as a lay person for looking after injured or orphaned wildlife. It is equally a required text book for I suggest all vet practices to help with initial treatment and recognition of young wildlife, I even found it at a wildlife hospital in Africa and that says something about its quality.

Highly recommended!
I have been rehabilitating wild birds for 7 years and this has book been extremely useful along with his St Tiggywinkles Wildcare Handbook. The book includes chapters on first response, fluid therapy, wound management, fracture management, diseases, hand rearing, diet, with separate chapters for each different group/species of birds and mammals. Fantastic detail and clear diagrams and photographs. This book is essential for UK rehabbers!

Great book! Even as a non-professional with limited animal care volunteering I found this book easy enough to understand. It's obviously aimed at vet nurses etc with things such as anaesthetic but it also provides great information on initial and ongoing care for injured animals. The fact that I got this version for a pittance in comparison to the updated (and presumably better) version makes it a bargain.
