Tough question, but taking less quantity so it spreads evenly on bread would be one option. Alternatively, you could use gloves while eating it or wearing a bib.

To answer your question, I'll give you my personal reflection. I have learned not to refrigerate nutella, if it gets too stiff the oil separates from it and what remains is a very hardened cocoa chocolate blend. I keep mine at room temperature it's always easy to spread the oils do not separate and the cocoa does not harden at the bottom of the jar. We use Nutella on Ritz crackers on ice cream smeared on banana we dip apple slices into it, and my grandchildren like it on their french fries LOL I hope I was able to answer your question.
