Goldfinch, The (DVD)Theodore “Theo” Decker (Ansel Elgort) was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day...a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.]]> Review: Absolutely brilliant! Keep an open mind, despite the negative reviews, and you may love it too. - I am glad I watched this movie before I read any reviews. The movie is long (two and a half hours), but I felt that the first half of the movie sets the stage for an unexpected, and exciting conclusion (I did not read the book, so it was a nice twist for me.). I very much appreciated the great performances by an amazing cast showcasing characters of great complexity. I thought the young actors excelled in their roles. The different characters' storylines were elegantly weaved into Theo's, displaying a broad variety human emotions, and moral values or lack thereof. It is a movie of contrasts, generosity and selfishness, kindness and brutality, guilt and forgiveness. Above all, it is a movie about redemption, and self-acceptance. I was deeply moved, and will watch this movie again, to further appreciate any subtleties I have missed. I highly recommend that you watch this movie with an open mind, without being biased by negative reviews. You may end up loving too. Review: Glorious Intrigue - This movie is often glorious at times. With a bunch of the best actors in the biz, it's hard to feel anything but authenticity from the characters' emotions and performances. The actors playing the young versions of the older characters do an incredible job, and Ansel Elgort is, as usual, fantastic. I really want to read the book now. The story is interesting, dramatic and perfectly woven, with twists at just the right moments. The music and cinematography are beautiful, the writing is great, and the actors make this intriguing story come alive. This is a thought-provoking, emotional and unique movie.

Good, HIGHLY NUANCED and long
Please don't watch if you're tired, unless you need something to help you go to sleep. I had never read the book so my review is based on the movie alone. It's a bit of a slow burn throughout... without giving spoilers (there are other reviews on here that will give you the gist) it's a story about trauma, love and sentimental value we place on things and how sometimes the treasured goods we hide or do not display (materialistically or emotionally, etc) is a loss for the world. For me this movie was highly symbolic. From the constrained love shown through the foster family and the distance kept, Theo, the main character carries survivors guilt and shame as well as lack of centering for his center was gone (not a spoiler - his mom dies in the bombing within opening scene). It's gorgeous to watch. Anson is really great in this role as well as the rest of the cast. Except for the Stranger Things kid with the terrible Russian accent. Overall, this love and loss movie is definitely long but worth the viewing. I noticed in nearly each scene, a bird was present somewhere. But highly recommend as you do watch, let it sit and take in the quiet turmoil of Theo and his emotional journey of abandonment and freedom.

I loved it, but it helps if you've read the book first
I loved the book. A brilliant tale well told. I saw this then saw the reviews on imdb and RT were so low. But the Amazon rating was better than normal so I gave it a try. I really liked it. I can see why people wouldn't. Not having read the book, it would seem to be wandering and a confusing plot. The movie could have done a better job of giving more of a roadmap, but that's sort of the point of the book, too. It's a journey that you experience more than an end in itself. So I can see why a lot of people wouldn't have the patience for it. So, maybe read the book first!

Some Exceptional Scenes, but a Missed Opportunity!
This movie had great potential, but the initial scences of the film that laid such a strong foundation were lost in the disjointed Hollywood portrayal of the book, creating nearly two hours of mishmash between the beginning and the end, being the most significant and best parts of the movie. The acting by Nicole Kidman was a strong redeeming element of the movie with her commanding performance highlighted by her most subtle and believable acting skills. This alone made the film worthwhile, showing how she dealt with her disfunctional family and her unintended houseguest. Oaks Fegley's charming and heartbreaking acting, especially with the earlier and later flashbacks, was the other saving grace of the screenplay depiction. John Crowley's strength directing children is always exceptional. Obviously, the book is better because of the well-written storytelling skills of the author, not easily transferred to film, except in the voice over transcription at the beginning. The final scenes are well worth watching, especially after the dearth of meaningful storyline in the middle, except for a few meaningful sections that included Jeffrey Wright's strong supporting performance. The movie has some strong and memorable scenes and exceptional acting, making the time invested in this longer movie format worthwhile. However, in the end, you'll likely have wished the middle had been handled differently. The language was a bit coarse at times. The 760 page book used the F-word 144 times, but the movie seemed to have used it more. Not sure why that was include over some more insightful dialogue from the book. This could have become a movie classic, but....?

El libro en que está basada es de mis favoritos, así que la película me gustó mucho, pues aunque obviamente quitan muchas cosas, en general me encanto ver las partes del libro que me gustaron.

Read the book first. It’s such a huge story over many years, I felt it just couldn’t be covered in the movie.
