But quality is excellent. Very nice looking. About 4 in. diameter and magnetic is strong. Am happy with it. **Q: How do you stop the ticking sound when not using?** A: I am using mine right now and there is no sound other the ringing at the end of the time. You need to return it for a new one. Hopes this helps. **Q: How do you soften the ticking sound if you don't want it as loud?** A: I am sitting about three feet from my timer that I am using right now and cannot hear the ticking. I hear it ticking lightly when I am within two feet or less. Yours may be defective and return it for a new one. **Q: Can you put it on a hot grill?** A: How hot is the grill? I have not done it, but I am sure you can,since it is a mechanical device, but if it is too hot, the plastic bits and pieces will melt. Plus, the timer itself will get unpleasantly hot. It has large black numbers. This is important for me since my eyesight is failing. Most other timers have small numbers making it harder for me to see. Another key feature is I do not have to be concerned about it getting lost on my kitchen counter nor have anything splashed on it since it is easily accessible on my frig.As you can see in my photo you can place it anywhere you have a flat metal surface. I can use it anywhere I chose. One for the barbeque. Another on my kitchen frig. The entire back surface is completely covered by the magnet. This is also important as it precludes any food particle, dirt or anything else getting caught behind the time. It is easy to clean with a damp cloth.
