Review: Great EDC Tactical Pen for use with Energel Pentel, very tough and balanced bolt action. - 3 YEAR UPDATE: LOVE this pen because it is tactical EDC and WRITE AMAZING because it uses PENTEL ENERGEL for excellent writing. I thought I lost it about a year later, then ordered another. Found the lost one and now I have two. Held up great, has some scratches after many drops on concrete. It does take Pentel refills with no issue. I see other reviewers had to switch springs from another Pentel or cut the empty plastic. But I have used at least 24 refills with Pentel Energel refills with metal and plastic tips and different colors with no modifications. My only wish was for it to be made of Steel, instead of aircraft aluminum AND to be a little thicker (1mm). Does have a 'glass break" tip, not sure if carbide, but looks strong. If to actually use for glass, you would need a firm grip and gloves. It is very well balanced. After years of use, one of the pens had the knob come off, I retightened and have had no issues (but would use locktight if it happened again as recommended). The top carbide cap holds down the clip, and will also loosen, but again all you need to do it tighten or use locktight to keep it in place. But beware, it will not fit a Pilot G2 refill. The Pentel Energel is just as good, maybe even a little more of a smother writter than the Pilot G2. And I'm a life long diehard Pilot G2 user, & lover! I gave this pen to my nephew, and bought the Everyman Grafton just so I could continue using my beloved Pilot G2 refills. **Q: Do fischer and rite in the rain refills fit?** A: I'm not sure about the Rite In The Rain refills, but The Fisher Space Ink refills will not fit. **Q: Are injoy compatible?** A: I don’t believe so, but the pentel ink refills are readily available, and if you are really in need, the gel pens they sell at Walmart uses the same refill. Two pack $3 **Q: Does this come in steel? how does this aluminum compare to steel? glass breaker?** A: I don’t think it comes in steel, but the aluminum is light and comfortable. Writes like a dream. The anodizing doesn’t wear off like I’ve experienced with far more expensive pens. The tungsten glass breaker is not sticking out too far. ( I’ve never used it to break a window). Just super writing pen. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Inexpensive entry bolt action pen *by V***4 on April 23, 2022* I bought this to see if I’d actually enjoy using a bolt action pen. The pen is very lightweight and the finish is fine. The body is rather slick and doesn’t offer a lot of grip. I like that it takes the Pentel refills and likely more. The price is easy on the wallet and I won’t cry too much if I lose it. My two real complaints are the pen came with a fake Energel refill in it and installing a real Energel refill makes the bolt action very tight and gritty. The first is an easy fix as I have a ton of Energel pens. I tried fixing the second by working the action over and over and over the past couple of days. It did not improve anything. The real Energel refill is a touch too long so it makes the action very tight which makes the bolt rub the body. This results in a very gritty feel due to the “fit and finish” of the pen and makes the action difficult to use. My thumb was a bit sore from working it so much trying to improve the feel. The easier fix is to remove a small sliver off the top of the refill. Shortening it just a millimeter or two drastically improved the action. I shortened it a hair too much, so the bolt rattles a little. It is actually easy and enjoyable to manipulate now with the modified refill. There is still a bit of grittiness at times, but I can’t expect perfection for the cost of the pen. I bought this pen in particular as it claims Energel compatibility, but it seems it is more suited as a G2 pen as their refills are slightly shorter. It is nice to have compatibility with multiple refills though. Four stars due to not being out of the box compatible with the Energel refills and for the slickness of the body.
