I have used them for about a month, so far so good. They are pretty solid, I use them in the ER.

could they cut thru shoes?

I haven't tried to cut through shoes, but as far as medical shears go, they are very well made and heavier than the cheap version you'll get at the drugstore. Running/training shoes: probably, but Military/hunting boots? Probably not. I don't know of any shears that could do that except maybe heavy duty kitchen shears such as those sold by Cutco. Those can cut through a penny if you have the hand strength.
