Why must you file your piece before testing? Does this not correctly identify gold plated?

I don't file the jewelry I'm testing unless I believe it is gold filled. This tester is very good at knowing solid gold from gold plated. This tester has two problems. The first is you should calibrate it with 18k gold for best results. You don't have to calibrate it every time. The second is stainless steel fools this tester. It often says stainless steel is platinum. So if you are testing something that is not hallmarked and it says it is platinum, you have to use acid or take it to a jeweler. The more you use this tester the more you will like it. It is easy to use. It is not messy. It is very accurate once you learn how to use it. I have learned to know when it lies to me. It is time   
 to recalibrate. This is the best tester out there for the price.
