It’s small, it’s powerfull, It’s easy to use, it’s productive ! Simply Perfect
The Rode SmartLav+ is a wearable microphone also known as a Lavalier mic it is a Broadcast Quality Professional Grade Lavalier Mic or at least that’s what it”s called, it comes with a TRRS jack which is compatible with most smartphones and the reason behind that is because the smartlav+ is mainly made for usage which motivated RODE to make an app for all the iOS users out there to benefit the most from its feautures, however if you are planning on pluging it to your DSLR or your camera don’t get your hopes too high since your camera needs a TRS jack while the SmartLav+ offers a TRRS one ! but on the other hand RODE did find a way around it by making the RODE SC3 Adapter a TRRS to TRS adapter so you can plug this directly to your camera that will cost you 15$ ! + Now lets talk about the mic itself ! It comes in a omnidirectional condeser mic capsule and inside of it is the discrete 4.5mm miniature microphone, the cable is a 116cm Kevlar reinforced cable so don’t worry about the microphone stretching or snaping in normal usage but I would recommand the Rode SC1 TRRS Extansion cable for an extra 580cm ! +The package also includes a foam windshield which feels pretty premium and will help you avoid all the t,b and p harsh sounds and will reduce the breathing noise it also comes together with a durable mounting clip so you can attach to your shirt ! Or anything you want and a cool locking letherate bag to take it with you if you are on the GO + Now I'll talk about some problems, first of all and the most annoying thing, is that whenever I plug it to my PC or even DSLR, the Clip keeps tazing me whenever it contacts my skin, which makes it harder on me ta concetrate on the content I am creating, 2nd things, is the cable, I beleive that it is tooo short for a lavalier mic, but what I did, is plug the smartLav+ to my smartphone and then put it back into my pocket ( which doesn't taze me lol) and then recor on both the msartphone and DSLR, and then later on I sync it in Premiere Pro, which makes it a lot easier and efficient to work with but those are not some serioues problems, and most of them can be fixed by using some commen sense So overall the microphone does an amazing job for it’s 79$ pricetag, and if I had to choose between this or even the seneheiser ME-2 which costs 70$ more I would easily pick this all day long so if you are considering buying both the SC3 and the SC1 Adapter then this whole setup will cost you around 120$ which is a nobrainer for the quality you are getting from this kit 😊

Yes. Unreal Audio Recordings From a Cell Phone.
This mic is unreal. If you record voice-overs for videos or podcasts or whatever, this allows you to do high-quality work on your cell phone, tablet, notebook, or possibly whatever device you use to record audio. I was a little skeptical because I figured my cell phone audio recording system might have several weak links, not just the microphone. Turns out the rest of the audio recording pipeline on my cellphone is reasonably solid, so using this microphone makes an astounding difference on my cell phone. And it makes outstanding recordings on my PC as well. If you make videos or record podcasts (especially on the go), I can't recommend this mic enough. I should have bought it long ago. Makes a huge difference. You can honestly record using this mic alone on a cell phone using any recording app in a quiet environment and get solid results. If you are comfortable doing some basic sound editing and using very simple VST plug-ins, get the TNT Voice Executor plug-in from Audified and you will get results so good that the vast majority of people (not including audio pros) will be thoroughly impressed with your voiceover/audio. I added the square trade insurance for a few bucks and I will keep the mic stored in the "pleather" bag that was in the package, so I'm hoping to get plenty of use out of these. Will update this review as needed. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase. The difference this microphone makes is astounding. I haven't tried it for voice dictation yet, but I'm confident it will be overkill for that, since the inferior boom-mics I currently use already give me solid, reliable results. Bottom Line: If you're thinking about getting this, get it. No way you'll regret it.

Great as long as you have the right iPhone adaptor!
I purchased this to use on an iPhone 8+ (using a 3.5mm lightning adaptor). I tested it as soon as I received it using a mock interview inside my office. Native iPhone video, vs Shure MV-88 and then Rode SmartLav+ with extension cord and without. The Shure MV-88 was a big improvement, but the Rode was a CLEAR winner rendering excellent sound with the video recording. On its next performance, we used the same set up for an event where we were interviewing people in a crowded room. The room noise was louder than the interviewee. We tested the microphone again today, outside and inside. We tested it on the iPhone native video, iPhone Voice Recorder as well as Movie Pro and FilmicPro. Nothing. Tap on the microphone and you can't hear anything. It is like an invisible on/off switch has been set to off. I tried using the Rode extension cord and only the original cord. I switched out three headphone adaptors, nothing No change. No audio pick up whatsoever. Someone else in Feb. bought one and said it stopped working after 4 times. Maybe this was a dud batch, but I am disappointed, particularly after it performed so stellar when we first tried it.UPDATE: The issue with this Rode is the adapter used for iPhone. If you buy a cheap adaptor, expect lousy results. I also now use a recording app (Movie Pro) that shows me if the mic is connected and the sound levels. If you have a cheap lightning adapter and use this on the native video app, you have no idea if you have a connection or not. Now Movie Pro or FilmicPro tells me. When I bought a better adaptor, it worked fine.

Great Lavalier Microphone, But Only for Smart Devices
I just purchased these for recording audio for live event video production. I record audio separate from my video and sync in post. Pros: The sound quality of the lav+ is great. The microphone is very responsive to the human voice frequency and overtones. Great dynamic range. This works perfect with the iphone 5s and android tablets and iPod touch. Great for dictation or a cheaper interview type audio recording situation. Seamless upload. After you record your audio you can send it to dropbox or sound cloud easily inside the Rode Rec App. Custom Audio settings. The Rode Rec App offers the user a plethora of settings to record quality audio for any application. You can set sampling rate (from11k up to 96k 24 bit), audio format (Mp3, Wav, WMA, ACC, etc), compression, limiting, gain, etc. The app really lets you dial it in. The App. The Rode Rec App is great. You can start recording on your smart device and turn off the screen so your subject doesn't accidentally hit "stop". Recommendations: For live event videogrpahy, I recommend using the smartlav+ with a iPod touch, or similar device, I do not recommend using a smart phone because if the phone is not switch to "airplane" mode or do not disturb, a incoming call will casue the app to pause the recording. Cons: iPod nano: you can not use the Rode app on a iPod nano. This would have been a great solution for recording multiple subjects at live events, but this is a apple issue that Rode should consider approaching apple about as it would benefit both. No extra windscreens: The smartlav+ only comes with one windscreen and I can't find extras anywhere online. So if you, or the person you place this mic on looses the windscreen, it's gone for good. So, I am disappointment rode doesn't offer windscreens separately. Smart devices only: The trrs connector. Because the connection is trrs as opposed to standard trs, the smartlav+ only works on smart devices. A majority of my business is weddings and I don't want to place my iphone on a groom, officiant, or bride to record audio. If they break it or loose it, its on me and I don't want to hand my clients a expensive device with all my contacts and other private information on it. I also can't trust their device because, they may turn it off, hit stop recording and not start again, or they could not switch to airplane mode and get a text, email, or phone call in the middle of the event and create a dead spot in the audio. Being strictly a smart device mic seems to have more draw backs than positives. Works with "dumb" devices, but you need a adapter. Rode does make a adapter, the rode SC3, but it's $15 per adapter and the plug is a 90 degree elbow which may be "ok" for the zoom h1, but it's not ideal for other digital recorders with top mounted inputs where a elbow plug is more likely snag something and disconnect or cause interference. I like this product, but it's hard to find a field recorder it is compatible with aside from smart devices. I am disappointed it doesn't play well with others. Conclusion: The sound quality is great. Rode constructed a great lavalier microphone. I wish it was easier to use with standard audio recorders. But, it performs exactly as Rode advertises. It is a great product. I wonder why Rode doesn't offer a alternative field recorder that would be a little easier for live event videographers on a budget, because I still worry someone will want to steal my smart device. If Rode did make a feild record strictly for the smartLav+, they would literally have the entire market to themselves. I do recommend this product because honestly there is nothing else out their in this price range and quality to compare it to.But, I also recommend using it with a iPod touch or similar device.

Great sound quality.
I use it for gaming on PS5. My friends say the mic sounds really crisp and clear. They can’t hear my fan blowing in the background or other noise. I plug the mic directly into the PS5 controller then use a separate headset connected to my sound system that is receiving chat and game audio via the HDMI cable from the console. Not the ideal setup for most but works and sounds really well on my livestream.

Not recognized and does not pick up distant sounds well
It is reviewed everywhere as one of the best mics, but what everyone forgets to mention is that this mic is very limited in terms of application usage: it is very good at close distances, bit it is basically useless if you are trying to record ambient sounds or sound source is at a distance or for lecture recordings in auditorium - main purpose that I bought it for in the first place. Turns out it has to be on a professor in order for me to record good sound lecture - what a joke. A lot of classmates have bought cheaper mics that pick up lecture in auditorium much better and no, they don't ask professor every-time to wear their mics. This is ridiculous. And if that wasn't enough - it is not recognized on my Surface Pro 4 at all! I am trying to work this out somehow, but I've been fiddling with settings half a day, googling to find solution and nothing helps! My previous cheap mic was recognized instantly and was plug and play, I don't know why this mic is not working like that. It is after all targeted for smartphones and tablets - so my Surface Pro 4 is a Windows tablet - so it should work, but it's not working. This is just frustrating and I spent 3 days ordering and waiting for shipment, picking it up and paid close to $100 with taxes and shipment! This is 5 times more than some other Lavalier mics of similar category. So far it's been nothing but negative experience from this mic. Manufacturer and reviewer need to acknowledge first of all with bold caps that this mic may not work on tablets or laptops

Amazing microphone for the cost, very durable and extremely well made
This is an amazing microphone for the size and cost. Picks up far more than I expected, using it on my Android as an external audio source for my video work. Also use it for content creation live from my Android. Couldn't be happier with it. Other reviewers have mentioned problems with the windscreen and if it's pushed down and click down properly I don't see a problem at all. First Mike had a significantly pinched off cable that was obviously from the light shipping materials, not a problem with manufacturing. It's small enough to fit in an envelope but delicate enough it really should go in a box. Come on suppliers, upgrade that shipping protection for this delicate little microphone.

Good product (Read on for important info.)
First things first - the mic has really good sound quality and is absolute value for money. I wanted to use it for moto vlogging and the wire was thin enough for me to roll it all up and hide it inside the helmet. Mic uses power from the device you are connecting it to so keep enough battery backup if you are looking for longer recordings. GoPro has a c-type port and will require an adapter to affix a mic. There is one available from GoPro itself. This mic has trrs connection jack. While some devices use trrs, some use trs. Incase you have a device, like GoPro, that uses a trs connection then you will need another adapter that converts trrs to trs jack. I spent a lot of time and learnt it the hard way struggling to find out why was there no sound going into my video. Check with your connecting device for the type of socket it has and order accordingly. My recommendation is either the company should include trrs to trs adapter in the packaging, or mention it on the page about this requirement.
