Review: Western Digital 14TB External Hard Drive
If you’re serious about storage, the Western Digital 14TB external drive is a powerhouse that delivers exceptional value and reliability. Whether you’re archiving massive video projects, backing up your entire photo library, or managing large-scale data workflows, this drive handles it all with ease. What I love: • 💾 Massive Capacity: With 14TB of space, it’s like having a digital warehouse at your fingertips. Ideal for creatives, gamers, and anyone juggling large files. • ⚡ Reliable Performance: The drive runs smoothly over USB 3.0, offering fast transfer speeds for a traditional HDD. It’s not SSD-fast, but for bulk storage, it’s more than sufficient. • 🔌 Plug-and-Play Simplicity: Setup is effortless—just connect and go. No complicated software or formatting headaches. • 💰 Excellent Value: At around 1.3 cents per gigabyte during deals A, it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to expand your storage. • 🖤 Minimalist Design: The sleek black casing fits unobtrusively into any workspace. It’s a no-frills look, but it gets the job done. Things to note: • It’s a desktop-style drive, so it requires external power—not ideal for travel. • Some users report mild noise and heat during extended use B, but nothing out of the ordinary for a high-capacity HDD. Overall, the WD 14TB external drive is a dependable workhorse. If you need serious storage without breaking the bank, this is a smart buy. I’d recommend it to anyone who values capacity, simplicity, and solid performance.

What integrity counts, it has to be WD
I work with hundreds of hard drives per year. I also recover data from hard drives, so I have a decent idea of what we're dealing with here. To put it bluntly, all consumer level hard drives are not great, but WD (Which bought out Hitachi Storage) is simply the best. It's why they cost more, and it's worth every cent. I've had brand new Seagate drives dead, right out of the 20-count boxes we get. Speed wise, I am not really sure how fast these are compared to other brands, but with SSDs, I view hard drives as a cheap/slow storage space. And 1 TB is a LOT of data if you think about it. I'm writing this on the 14TB drive, but that can be hundreds of thousands of pictures for example. So the real question is "What would you do if you lost them all?" Take it from me, it is always "When" is it going to die and not "if". The drive will fail, no matter what. So you should always have a backup drive. If this is your backup drive, then you're all set. If this is your "main" drive, then consider buying a second, even if the second one is a Seagate - point being you are covered when the main one breaks. I have taken these apart before (Not the more modern very large ones) and those drives did work as internal drives, but I would hesitate to do that simply because you're probably going to trash your warrantee when you try and return a case that has a bunch of broken tabs (The cases for these elements drives are terrible and fall apart when you try to take them apart). My drive shipped with a rather small power brick, which was a nice touch. I think the cable length was something like 5 feet, so it's not a super short cord. Used the USB to connect to a Windows 11 laptop and it found the drive right away without any issues at all. If you use this as a permanent drive, e.g. a home network share, then you can go into Windows Device Manager and switch the drive type to include caching which speeds up the drive a bit (At the expense of data loss if you do not eject the drive before you yank the plug). If data integrity is essential, then for consumers, I would recommend the Red series drives as they are made for home network storage units. For corporate, the Enterprise drives (Which are usually SAS and not SATA) are the way to go. Of course none of those are USB drives, but I'm throwing this out there in case you have the option of going with an internal drive. At the end of the day though, like I started with, data integrity is the most important thing for me, and it doesn't get better than Western Digital.

Good value, reliable if you take care
I use several of these for backup. One had a corruption so I bought a third to transfer files. I reformatted the corrupt unit and it works great again. Still going strong after a couple years of daily use. One thing to note, I don’t travel with these so they stay on a shelf with rubber insulators underneath to prevent bumps and shock. For the price they’re a good value.

Great for backup, not for daily use.
I have several Elements drives ( three 20TB, this new 14TB and an old 8TB )that, when on sale, are a great value per GB/TB, although I would avoid anything below 8TB because those drives use cheaper, less reliable SMR technology ( web search " SMR vs CMR " for details.) I use them only to backup large video files which they're perfect for and remain unplugged otherwise. The reason is that Elements drives enter sleep mode after only 30 seconds of idle, and the firmware doesn't allow for use of WD Utilities software so the sleep time cannot be adjusted, which makes them inadequate as a second or third drive for constant daily use. If all you need is lots of space for backups, these are perfect. However, if you're looking for an hdd that you can leave plugged in and use it as an additional drive, there are better options such as the WD My Book drives for which you CAN use WD Utilities to adjust the sleep timer so it stays awake and ready. I have a couple of those as well, but they're more expensive. A third option is my go to. I purchased a 10tb WD Black and put it in a Startech enclosure. With this, I get great performance ( for an HDD ) and it acts exactly like an internal drive inside my pc. Of course, not even this high performance drive can match the speed of an SSD ( 4 of which populate the inside of my pc and are used for all of my video rendering and editing,) but once again, for the price per GB/TB, and the total amount of storage, it's worth it. In conclusion, if all you need is storage for backups, you can't go wrong with the Elements series, but if you need something to act more like an internal drive for regular use and don't have space inside your computer, the options I mentioned are far better!

Reliable, quiet, and perfect for backups
I’ve been using this 14TB WD Elements drive primarily for backups and long-term storage, and it’s been excellent. The setup was as simple as plugging it in, and it was recognized immediately. The large capacity is more than enough for photos, videos, documents, and other large files, making it a great choice if you’re running out of space on your computer.

crashed after 8 months!!!
Bought tis item on Oct. 7th 2025. I have added much important data to it and as of today 07-24-2006 it is not recognized by ant of my 3 desktop computers all running different operating systems. win 7, win 10 win 11. 15 minutes ago I transferred files to it and it was fine. Now the light is on but I can't access it. I have tried all of the recovery methods but still DEAD! Way past the point of returning so I guess I'm screwed and my data is gone. If this is not resolved I will NEVER buy a Wester Digital product again and since I am an official Google reviewer I will write a "SCALDING" review on this product. I WANT MY DATA BACK!!!
