Enjoy :-) Review: Still Awaiting the Perfect Media Player - This Comes Close - I've tried a few media players - Qnap NMP-1000, Asus O!Play, Dune D1, Dune HD Base 3D. Of these, the Dune players have the best ratio of ease of use, reliability and operational speed. I originally bought the D1, which I love for playing ordinary DVD and Blu Ray rips (MKV and ISO) - and is probably the best media player I own overall (it has better support for Blu Ray ISO files) - but I wanted a player which supports 3D formats so I could stream 3D movies to my 3D Epson projector. One thing to note about the Dune HD Base 3D is that despite the published specs, it *does* support Blu Ray ISO files - it just doesn't support full menu rendition. You get a list of tracks on the disc and you just need to select the one you want to play. If all you want to do is rip a 3D Bly Ray to an ISO file using something like DVDFab, you will be able to play it in 3D over HDMI (or Wireless HD on the Epson EH-TW6100W) using the Dune HD Base 3D (assuming you're running current firmware). Unfortunately it doesn't support 3D photos (e.g. MPO) but not many players do. If it had done, I'd have given it a full 5 stars, because it would save me all the hassle of converting my 3D photos to 3D Blu Ray movies. I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum to do that. At least now I don't need to bother writing them to Blu Ray discs. The controller is a nice size and perfectly functional, it has all the connectivity you'd expect of a high spec media player, and it has a built in quick-release hard drive slot if you prefer to store your content on-board (personally I don't bother). If you want to stop messing around with Blu Ray discs, this is the player for you. Not perfect (no current media player is) but getting there. Recommended. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Could be improved ... *by M***S on 15 February 2014* Bought the Dune to organise my growing collection of external HDD's dedicated to movies. Opted to use Zappiti software to use as a jukebox and I needed help to get this set up [thanks to everyone on the forum for their patience] once done that part was okay. Regrettably, my USB 3.0 3TB drives could not be read - which was a setback. So opted to use 2 x 2TB externals instead and a 2TB internal HDD. The slight noise from the internal fan was irritating when the internal HDD was used but only on quiet movie passages [and perhaps I am a little too sensitive to extraneous noise anyway!] But the big failures, in my opinion, were: a] the juddering playback on many of my movies. This apparently needed a firmware fix from Dune to rectify and according to members of the forum had been resolved in a 'Zappiti' badged version of the player, but not in this 'flagship' model from Dune. The last firmware update was some 8 months ago; b] many of my films will not play properly because the 'wrong type' of codec had been used. All my films play perfectly well through other hardware eg [my Oppo BluRay player] and having returned the Dune and purchased a Mede8er equivalent I find that all my sources now play perfectly. c] playback of TrueHD and DTS-MA were rather hit and miss affairs. Some played, others displayed 'this player cannot playback this type of movie] very annoying when you've just settled down to watch something specific. It all rather leads to: what am I doing wrong? type questions. So in summary, it was frustrating that the Dune didn't fully deliver for me. When it did play my films faultlessly it was great and the Zappiti software to create a jukebox wall was rather good. It also has a display [the Mede8er doesn't] and looks better on a hi-fi rack because it looks just like hi-fi equipment and has all the connections neatly at the rear. After returning the Dune, I have read that a new firmware release was made available by Dune. This has been received with mixed reviews by forum members. Some issues were resolved, other new ones [that were not present on previous firmware releases] have been re-introduced. Whether any of my 'problems' were fixed I am unable to say.
