how to operation it？ need squeeze all the time to keep the water out？

You only need to squeeze the pump a few times, once water is flowing out it will continue whist ever the filter is in the tank and under the water

Do you need to take the fish out of the water when you do this?

Depends on how many fish you have and if you are doing a half or complete water change. I have a 30 litre tank with 2 fish so don’t remove them. I leave enough water for them to swim in. Hope this helps.

I have very fine sand, will be too strong for that? I find most pumps empty water too fast

I also had sand but couldn’t put the pump to the bottom as the sand would have been sucked up. I used to riddle the sand and then hold the pump an inch or so above it. It’s a good pump but yes it does take the water out fairly fast.. it’s the only one I’ve ever had so cannot compare it with any other.

What diameter is the soft pipe, as I want to add a tap to stop the flow..?

You'll not need a tap, just lift the suction end pipe out of the water and it will stop. This is a good product that makes water changes easy.
