Size and Quality Matters
Excellent little camera with changeable lenses

Beginner who loves the options and features
I got a great deal in this camera! As a beginner, I was looking for a camera that would allow me to experiment with different ideas, and this is it! It's a great camera that will take care of 99% of focus/lighting problems for me, while being flexible enough to allow me to explore different areas of photography and cinematography and figure out which direction I want to go. Why buy a $1000+ special-purpose camera when this one will do it all? It takes great photos, it records 1080p, it even has a mic. I got mine with two lenses (10-30mm & 30-110mm), and between them, they're great for any event: from documenting a culinary experience to shooting close ups of kites soaring high [...] I highly recommend buying a compatible IR controller, so you can take photos without being behind the camera: without that, I need a mirror to take selfies. (You really won't want to use your smartphone camera again!) Also, once you see the potential of the 110mm zoom lens, you're gonna want one which can zoom even further; but it still does plenty well as is.

A good camera for the casual photographer.
I am not a serious photographer by any means but I wanted a camera that was a step above my simple point and shoot. Thus far the Nikon J1 is meeting that need. It has the simplicity of a point and shoot but allows for different lenses to give some degree of flexibility in your photos. The advanced CMOS processor allows for better shots in low light than my previous camera. There some pretty cool features such as the Smart Photo Selector mode which allows continuous shots of a subject from which you can chose the best shot. It also takes high quality HD movies. All things considered I am happy with the J1. It is a good camera for the price. A lot of camera snobs will tear it apart because they expect a professional style product but this isn't that type of camera. Take it on vacation, take pictures of your kids at the beach, photograph your friends at a party. If you want your photos to be in National Geographic then save your money and spend $3000. for the right camera. A few things to consider: 1. Buy an extra battery to have on hand. Find an off brand battery as the Nikon brand battery is $30+. I found one for $10 on Amazon. 2. I purchased my J1 with the 10-30mm lens. In retrospect I would have chosen the 30-110mm as the 30mm zoom isn't quite strong enough for my needs. Ideally buy both. 3. This isn't a camera that you can stash in your pants pocket. You will need to have a carry bag for extra lenses, battery, etc.

Just what I was looking for!!
This camera is just what I was looking for. A small, easily to work, and good quality camera. I am in love with the way the pictures come out. The battery life is also pretty good compared to my old camera. The photo and videos come out as if you were looking at something and you took a picture right then and there, which is probably my favorite thing about this camera. Also the auto focus works very well. overall it is a great camera and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Stay away from this model.
Thoroughly disappointing! The 10-30mm lens has been recalled for good reason. Even after repair, these lenses have failed. Every recalled lens has a black dot engraved onto the lens body. Poor focus at distance. Poor for inside use, even in a room with windows...photos come out dark. Its simple to use, but what good is simple if your photos are not clear, bright, usable. Made in China, not Japan.
