Product description JAMIE CULLUM, JAMIE - LIVE AT BLENHEIM PALACE desertcart.com The sprawling baroque manor of Blenheim Palace provides an ideal setting for Jamie Cullum's summer 2004 festival documentary, Live at Blenheim Palace, an exhaustive record of his stage show. He commands the stage space with a confidence that belies his tender years, ignoring the usual limitations of the performer's body. He's often found under the piano, or dancing on top of its lid, or even inside, using the entire instrument as a percussion tool. He's constantly running around the stage, interacting with his band, bounding down to shake hands with the front rows. Cullum is modest about his jazz credentials but has excellent taste when recruiting his regular team of bassist Geoff Gascoyne and drummer Sebastiaan De Kromm. Cullum's horn section also boasts the presence of trombonist Barnaby Dickinson and saxophonist Ben Castle, two of Britain's brightest newcomers. The camerawork doesn't distract, but still has a dynamic sense, managing to keep track of Cullum's antics from a variety of quick-edit angles. There isn't much preamble, with the concert presented in straightforward manner. In-between each cluster of songs, there's a selection of documentary inserts, showing Jamie on tour in the U.S., playing at Glastonbury, paying homage to the 1950s beat poets, and meeting his (mostly female) autograph hunters. Extras include the trio playing in San Francisco (with no audience gathered, funnily enough), more Glastonbury footage, an excerpt from the South Bank Show special and the videos of "All at Sea," "These Are the Days," and "The Wind Cries Mary." --Martin Longley Review: A phenomenon captured - A jaw-droppingly wonderful, absolutely breathtaking performance by Jamie, his excellent fellow trio members Geoff Gascoyne and Sebastiaan deKromm, and a complement of talented side musicians. Although I've owned this DVD for a couple of months now (and have watched at least parts of it close to every day, on some days more than once), I wanted to wait until after I'd had the chance to see Jamie perform live before commenting on the recording. Earlier this month, I was lucky enough to attend one of two sold-out U.S. concerts scheduled around the launch date of Jamie's new CD, "Catching Tales" (also simply wonderful). That show was spectacular, and although the small, standing-room-only club, holding a few hundred people at most, was a venue very different from that on the DVD, the Blenheim concert recording does a terrific job of capturing the spirit, energy, and sheer enjoyment to be found watching Jamie and company perform. The show is about to begin; Jamie saunters onstage, salutes the audience, starts to sing the first number, "I Get a Kick Out of You" - and that's it, you're hooked for two hours, no possibility of escape, not that you'd want to. I've never seen a performer grab one's attention as thoroughly as does Jamie: you simply can't take your eyes - much less ears - off him. The music is sublime, the photography is superb, and the sound is of CD quality; the DVD extras are pretty neat, too, including a fascinating glimpse of an early version of an apparently then-unfinished song - performed on a San Francisco street, no less, using a guitar case for percussion and a discarded sofa as a prop - that turns up in the concert filmed a month or so later in its final, hauntingly beautiful form. Just a fabulous DVD from a magnificent musician and performer - get it, turn it on, and enjoy. (And by the way, if you want more - and I'm pretty sure you will - Jamie & co. are planning a U.S. tour for early in 2006; check his web site periodically for updates.) EDIT, 8/15/07: Thirteen live Jamie gigs later, I have to say that as wonderful as this DVD is - still DEFINITELY worth owning and watching - Jamie has come SO far musically in the three years since it was recorded, that a new DVD is LONG overdue. Dare we hope for one in the not-too-distant future? Until then, get this one - and see him live if he comes your way. Review: Jamie Cullum is Extraordinary LIVE!!! - Jamie Cullum puts on a phenomenal live show. This DVD provides a well-crafted view of his live show at Blenheim Palace, and I plan on watching it many times!! The DVD is great at presenting this brilliant jazz vocalist, pianist, and performer with fantastic photography and sound capturing his every move. I also loved the behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Jamie that also show his personality to fill out the picture. Great not only for Jamie Cullum fans, but for music lovers that enjoy live performances. Jamie's shows just make you happy, and often amazed, because of his superb skills and presentation. Jamie is a gem of an artist. I've seen him live, and will hopefully see more of him live. And this DVD captures the feel of his live shows. I'm grateful to have this DVD!!

One of the biggest talents in YEARS
Jamie Cullum has the vocal abilities of Harry Connick Jr. crossed with Frank Sinatra. He has the stage presence of David Lee Roth. Combine this with a killer rhythm section, great horns, and strings and you have one of the most phenomenal music experiences around. Also, I noticed that this is THE BEST recorded concert I have ever heard. The microphones used (and I'm guessing pre-amps) make this the cleanest, most crisp and well defined DVDs I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I checked ebay the minute I saw Jamie was singing into a Neumann KK105(s). So to summarize; this DVD of Jamie is the most soulful, entertaining, and amazing musical performances on record.

Mr. Cullum's take!
Blenheim Palace is a magnificant back-drop, Jamie's energy is in sharp contrast to that of the audience... their footsies tapping & heads nodding are dwarfed (a weary looking bunch not worthy of the camera's attention, ahh well! perhaps it was a chilly day) by this "young chap's" almost dizzying performance. A repetoire of Standards & POP' with "a little jam on top" that brilliantly boomerang to the studio arrangement before we all get zoned in the improv'. At times his voice surrenders to his aerobics... but kudos to him as he instantly tames his own pace ... to deliver a quiet emotional ballad. The video quality is good "for an outdoor venue" & the sound is decent too "not brilliant though". There are some cutaways of him touring the U.S. gifting us some insight to the talent. All in all, a wonderful DVD that certainly can bridge the generations... Mr. Cullum adds a new meaning to PLAYING the GRAND Piano; the only thing he doesn't do, is wear it.

Jamie Cullum is Amazing...and this video displays that!
If you're a Jamie Cullum fan, you MUST buy this video. Blenheim is an amazing venue, and as a video director myself I really appreciate the stunning job the production crew did on this video. They went from full daylight to full nighttime, and captured all the nuances in between. This is simply an amazing video of a brilliant artist, and you will love it from the first frame to the last.
