Keep in mind that the top of the disc that you can see without opening the ball will tend to turn black long before the rest of the disc turns black. The Bath Ball Housing needs to be opened and the entire disc inspected in order to determine if it has expired. When you pop the disc out of the Bath Ball Housing and inspect the entire disc, if 100% of the disc is not yet completely jet black, there is still some life left in the filter and you can continue using it. Another tip for maximizing the life of the bath ball disc, especially for folks that only take bath occasionally, is to store the disc in a Tupperware full of water in-between uses (letting the disc dry out completely then re-activating repeatedly in-between uses can reduce lifespan). Of course there are some customers with water supplies where the water quality is exceptionally bad and/or there are customers who are much more frequent bath takers......in these cases more frequent replacement of the disc is required. In general, the typical customer purchases a fresh bath ball disc approximately once every 8-12 months.
